In Honor of Veterans Day..What are the BEST WAR Movies ever made?

To be reverant, Veterans Day began as Armistice Day or Remembrance Day to commemorate the signing of the armistice between Germany and the Allied forces ending World War I on the western front. In light of this, I've limited My List to movies that take place during World War I and those battles afterward. Being "Veterans Day" an American Observation the list could include any conflict where US Soldiers fought for our country. But to honor the brave men & women EVERYWHERE who fought against tyranny and for freedom, (and to include the MANY Spill members around the world) feel free to include war films about (& from) other nations.
And to honor the dead, (& to someday stop the strife among men) PLEASE feel free to
include your lists of the BEST ANTI-WAR Movies ever.

in total my favorite is Platoon.
i also enjoyed enemy at the gate, and Band of Brothers.
I love Shindler's List but i don't know if i would call that an anti war film, the movie deals mainly with the subject of the holocaust.

Hey, thanks for replying Amit. "Platoon" is POWERFUL! I might be crazy, but if the Horrors of the Holocaust do not speak AGAINST War I don't know what does?

Reply to This

Well me personally i don't consider the holocaust as a part of WWII, first of all because the hate campaign especially against the Jews started prior to the war.

and the killing of millions in a factory like fashion is not a part of the war, it just happened to co-exist with it.

But hey that's just my opinion.

I hear your viewpoint, Amit. But one of the most Powerful episodes of "Band of Brothers" was "Why We Fight" when Easy Company saw first hand what the Germans had been up to, but I understand your argument. Thanks for sharing.

Great List, Brian, thanks for replying. AAAAGH... HOW COULD I FORGET "DOWNFALL" (just saw it recently too)
slipped my mind .. GREAT FILM! NO I have NOT seen the 5 hour miniseries of Das Boot..is it AMAZING?

Reply to This

Yes, it is amazing. However, here's a friendly warning. There are parts in the film that will test your endurence because there are boring scenes, but they are intentional. Wolfgang Peterson wanted to show how life is like on the U-Boat. So, there are scenes where nothing is happening. But, when the sh*t hits the fan, sh*t does hit the fan.

I saw the 3 1/2 hour version when I was a kid and I remembered being very bored with it, so I don't remember much of what I saw. Now, that I matured a little, I have respect for this version for really showing the reality of war.

There are DVDs of this version out there, so it's easy to find it. And, word is, there are people who said that this is the best version.

Hey, Cool, Brian. Thanks for the info, have to track this version down. It makes sense, a LOT of Military life is "Hurry up, and Wait!"... tedium.

Dude... Glory?? See, I enjoy the topic of the civil war and everything but Ferris Bueller was so miscast in this movie it ruined it for me completely. I was never sucked into the story at all. Other than that, great list.

Hey, thanks for the comment, Kurt. You know I had misgivings about that myself, but to negate the whole rest of the picture because of that seems a crime, I mean Denzel & Morgan Freeman give *I feel* some of the BEST performances of their careers.
