Christian posted a statusThe IllumiRoom is a peripheral that is currently in the proof-of-concept phase at Microsoft. For those of you who haven't seen it yet, check out the video below. It is essentially a device that augments the area around a television using the Kinect and a projector "to blur the lines between on-screen content and the environment we live in allowing us to combine our virtual and physical worlds."

I think this has the potential to bring something new to the world of gaming. The prospect of added peripheral vision while playing an epic shooter does kind of seem exciting. Who knows? It could even spill over into non-gaming activities like movie watching or menu navigation.
What do you all think? Is Microsoft on the verge of a breakthrough or are they wasting their time with something no one asked for?

And Chig's right....Good GOD does that thing look annoying and excessive as hell. Is this supposed to be some kind of attempt to be the "IMAX" of gaming or something? If so....just...no...quit while you're ahead.
Permalink Reply by Joong on January 21, 2013 at 5:33pm I prefer the most subtle version of this, amBX. Much more classy and I don't need a large room to enjoy it but even amBX is still distracting, I suppose it takes a while to get used to but I can't imagine myself playing with something that's much more obnoxious than that.
Might be cool to show off to friends, but other than that, I see nothing in that video that would make me feel more immersed.
Also, speaking of Microsoft and gimmicks.

The worst parts of that video are the kart racing and the space parts where it's basically just a bad windows screensaver of snow/stars on the wall. Whoop-de-shit. I just don't see anything in the video to justify buying a projector add-on to the kinect add-on that I already don't own.
