I Use twitter a lot (http://twitter.com/benwhipps if you want to follow me) but prior to my conversion i was one of the people who wrote it off. I'm back at University now and i was shocked to discover that the percentage of people who not only don't use Twitter, but don't actually know what Twitter is is very high.
I've tried multiple methods of explaining what it is and why it's cool with little success.
How do you guys A) describe what Twitter is, and B) try to sell people on using twitter?
I don't use it or plan to- mostly because it's not a requirement for life and I'm not interested in seeing what people have to say about what I'm doing- but from what I've heard and seen about it, it's a site where you type your status about what you're doing and people "follow" you and you can follow them and others. How this is different from Facebook or other networking sites, I don't know. To sell it, I guess you could say that celebrities use it and it played a part in getting word out about the elections in Iran, if that matters.
Other than that, your life won't be impacted if you wrote it off and didn't use it.

A) Twitter is a "blurb" of what's going on in your life.
B) I sell people on twitter by telling them that MY life is more important than THEIR life. It tends to work, because people ask me about the Twitter account that I don't have or don't use, and I laugh at them.
This is one of the ways it was explained to me. I knew what it was from the start, but it makes sense. It is a site that is just Facebook statuses. If they don't know what Facebook is, fuck em.
Really, find out if there are celebrities or public figures or shit like that that are also on Twitter. That's what sold me on the idea in the end.
You too can follow the inane lives of celebrities!! As if having them splayed across every newsstand, magazine rack, gossip column, and asinine television program wasn't enough!! Now they can be on your phone!!
I think I'll hold out for the nanotechnology that wakes me from my sleep to inform me that Brad Pitt finally shat out the last of that bad ham sandwich, and now he's relaxing on the couch watching reruns of The Munsters.
