A few things to kick off this thread:
What's the first horror game you've played?
What is the scariest moment you've experienced in a horror game?
How do you feel about horror games this gen? Unimpressed? Are they better?
You can answer one of these questions or all, or whatever's on your mind about horror games.
On the chart above I'm usually 3-4 but the last time I played the first Fatal Frame I was about to reach 5, so I guess I was around 4.5?
Anyway, most of my gaming memories come with the N64/PS/PS2, so one of the first horror games I played was Resident Evil 2 on the N64 (I think I'm the only one who played it in this console), it was terrifying, specially as a kid, but most of the horror to me was reduced by using cheats so I don't think I had the full experience with it, I think I played it more for the thrills.
Which brings me back to Silent Hill on the Playstation, fuck this game, it made me reach 6 on the chart, I'm not kidding, imagine a kid playing this game for the first time, specially experiencing THIS FUCKING MOMENT:
I don't think I was ever as scared in any other horror game, I had no idea what this game was about, all I knew was the store owner recommended it to me. It just felt so weird, all along I was wondering to myself, what's with the fog? why does the music sound so weird? Oh look that kid is going over there I should follow her! uhmm, what the fuck is this place? why doesn't that alarm stop? a wheel chair? a hospital bed? What in the fuck is going on in this game? WHY SO MUCH BLOOD? JESUS FUCK WHO ARE YOU PEOPLE? I CANT FIGHT BACK SO WHY WONT YOU LET ME LEAVE THIS PLACE.
I never felt so helpless and vulnerable in my life and to this day I still can't bring myself to complete that game.

The first horror game I played was Dino Crisis and fucking christ, those raptors make me shit my pants in the dark.
What is the scariest moment you've experienced in a horror game?
Condemned: The part with the Mannequins. God i fucking hate them.
How do you feel about horror games this gens?
Disappointing. Nowadays, horror games are a joke and adding co-op to every single horror game just ruins the scary atmosphere that it tries to deliver. The only game that is actually scary in this new generation of horror games is Slender and that's because it doesn't need to rely on flashy visuals or hardcore action set-pieces, it relies on tension and atmosphere alone to make the player feel uncomfortable. Maybe someday a true horror game will come out of the market, now that I lost all hope on Dead Space 3.
On scale: 4-6

What is the scariest moment you've experienced in a horror game?
dead space......all of dead space
How do you feel about horror games this gen? Unimpressed? Are they better?
it depends on the franchise, for me, resident evil 2 is a better game than resident evil 5, but dead space is a better game than both. i prefer newer games because they have the technology to provide better scares
Permalink Reply by Ezmeraldo15 on August 22, 2012 at 4:57pm Fear Effect was probably one of the first horror games I played, it was quite uncomfortable to play at times LOL.
The scariest moment for me in a horror game would probably be the Lyccor in RE2 when you see it in the window at the police station, the first time playing at least, I nearly jizzed my pants LOL. I unfornately didn't get much farther after that point or RE1 for that matter LOL.
As far as horror games this gen, I really can't name any horror games this gen, I mean I've played RE4 and RE5 but those to me aren't horror games, there very good games, but not exactly horror. I also haven't played any of the Dead Space games, I heard after the 1st Dead Space it gets more actiony.

Permalink Reply by Dirac on August 22, 2012 at 7:25pm First horror game: Resident Evil: Code Veronica. Bad start, I know.
Scariest moment: Silent Hill 3, the mirror room in the Otherworld Hospital. That particular moment is probably the freakiest in the entire series (though the first Otherworld encounter mentioned in the original post comes quite close). Despite the game being almost a decade old, I don't want to go into detail, in case anyone reading hasn't made it to that point yet. I'll just say that playing through the game to see that is totally worth it.
I'm disappointed in the current, mainstream horror titles; you know things are bad when a first-person shooter (Condemned) is the scariest game of this generation. Silent Hill Downpour was a return to more traditional survival horror gameplay, which was nice after Homecoming, but it doesn't hold a candle to the original SH trilogy. It seems as though most of the decent titles are being produced by indie developers like Frictional Games. I only played about 5 minutes into the demo for Amnesia: The Dark Descent before I reached level 5 on the chart. That's the kind of game I'd like to see done on a bigger budget (though the lack of self defense is a drag).
Strangely enough, one of the best horror games I've played this generation is Dark Souls. Sure, it's not survival horror per se, but there were a number of times when I almost felt the kind of "holy shit, I don't want to go any further" dread I used to feel when playing SH1 or 2. Maybe I've just gone soft after not having a good survival horror title in a while, but I was still pleasantly surprised at how scary that game could get at times.
Permalink Reply by Joong on August 22, 2012 at 9:39pm Yeah, mirror room is one of the most memorable moments in a horror game. Also, what's so bad about a first person game being the scariest? Granted, I much prefer games in a third person view but I don't think it matters that much when it comes to a horror game. As long as they get the atmosphere, immersion, etc. right, then the POV camera doesn't matter much.
Also, you just reminded me that I will never own Condemned 2 for PC.
