If it's crap... We'll tell you

One of my friends and I have recently been on the search for a movie that is genuinely terrifying to watch. Not just scary or horrific, but a film that as you watch you think "What the shit have I got myself into here?" A film that draws you into the situation the characters are going through and makes you as a viewer feel threatened and uncomfortable.

There has only been a couple that have come remotely close to this IMO i.e. Martyrs (2008 French Horror) and perhaps "Them", but only in parts; close but no cigar. Also, [REC] is up there in terms of realism.

Obviously what taps into people's fear can vary but DO YOU THINK THAT SUCH A MOVIE COULD EXIST, OR HAVE YOU EXPERIENCED ONE?

Yes REC was on the right track also. I guess it's all about the mood of the movie rather than how many jumps or how much blood is in it. It could be a search for something that doesn't exist for all I know haha.

I once saw a movie called Mothman Prophesies that kinda creeped me out. Didn't make me scream though

For some people, I don't think such a movie could exist. The reason for that is just because some people are always able to remind themselves that it's only a movie. I think a documentary could exist like that. As an adult, I don't think I've ever seen a movie that genuinly scared the hell out of me. I've seen plenty that creeped me out, but none that I lost sleep over.

The idea of making a horror documentary is interesting. I have not seen the movie Man Bites Dog but wasn't it shot like a documentary? And that film had a more realistic feel from what i have heard. I guess they did that with blair which and a lot of people were horrified from that film

the problem is that when horror movies come out, its either b horror, or "boo" horror. Neither of the 2 are scary, but I think if you DID make a movie that was truely scary, it couldn't be about slashers, or zombies, vampires, etc. Also, I think the gore is not needed, your mind creates enough horror. The other problem is that EVERYTHING'S been done already and people KEEP doig the same shit so no, it isnt scary the second time.

If it were up to me, I would write a list of things that horrified me, and then generate a horror flick from that.

Nah, never seen a movie that actually scared me. I hope someone gives you a good answer though.

Before it actually came out, the preview for The Grudge gave me nightmares. After I watched it, though, It wasn't so scary.

Do you think that it might also have to do with the venue that you see the movie in? By this i mean theater vs. your 20 inch tv at home with crap sound. I personally dont usually watch horror films in theaters because it freaks me out to much. The home TV is a lot less scary. What if you watched a film like Martyrs alone in a dark theater?

Well that would be pretty intense yes, but as you say it would be more because of the venue. I suppose i'm looking for a film that is terrifying regardless of what sized screen you watch it on or who you watch with. If i'm watching a scary movie at home I will always turn the lights off and try and draw all my attention into the movie itself, and some scenes may come across scarier than if watched in broad daylight. Call me sick but I want the experience of being tense and genuinely scared throughout the film, and I know i'm not the only one out there! haha

If there is one then I haven't watched it.

I have watched plenty of scary movies, but no movie has ever made me feel like THIS.

That's the kind of reaction I would be after
