If it's crap ... We'll tell you
Overall, a satisfactory pilot episode for me. Being a fan of the book series, I had high hopes, and this looks like it's going to do it justice.
The need to get things moving in the pilot has meant that a great deal of character development has been omitted. This is a shame, but a perfectly understandable one. I'm expecting that as the series progresses the characters will become more distinct and identifiable, but I suspect that viewers unfamiliar with the story may be a little overwhelmed at this stage by the sheer volume of characters introduced. In my view it would have been better to spend less time on the other continent in the pilot, moving some of the scenes shown to episode 2.
The imagery is excellent, no expense has been spared on costumes, sets, backdrops etc. Top quality. Similarly, the cast is very well chosen. I can't wait to see Charles Dance as Tywin Lannister.
I don't expect to see another series of this quality in 2011. And it's already been renewed for a second season.

another problem i have is Rickon is barely seen, too old, and nowhere near as wild as he is s'posed to be. Rickon and Shaggydog are my homies.

HBO makes some of the best series on TV right now (thrones, boardwalk empire, curb)...but i hate that its like 10 years between seasons.

If you haven't watched the finale, do not read on SPOILERS. Next season has zombies and dragons!!!! Things that this finale has me looking forward to in season 2:
- What exactly is north of the wall.
- Tyrion Lannister going head to head with the ever manipulative Littlefinger and Varys as the king's Hand.
- Robert's bastard son Gendry finally getting a little character developement.
- Finally, dragons and zombies!
What did you all think of the season 1 finale?

The final scene, while good, didn't have quite the same impact that it did in the book. I didn't think the funeral pyre was quite large and voluminous enough for example. As depicted it would have burned out quite quickly.
Jack Gleeson gets a nod as the ever loathsome Joffrey.

Permalink Reply by MDS on June 22, 2011 at 8:26am I'm still sort of split on the season finale.
******** SPOILER ALERT********
What I think let me down the most was the whole "Drago" storyline. After so much of a build up towards his horde sweeping into the 7 kingdoms and possibly setting off a wake of destruction, to only have him DIE?! Sorry, but that seemed like such a cock-tease the entire season. While still disappointed about where that story imploded, and the Joffey still being petty.... I kind of felt let-down by those characters. One was a "pft, what a waste" and the other was "pft, you know he's going to die", just felt "bland" for season finales.
However, the REST of the series (And the 3/4 of the season finale)...that I loved. Actually looking forward to the second season already, and have been since the second episode. Thankfully I've got True Blood to take up the time.

Permalink Reply by One Trick Pony on June 27, 2011 at 9:39am No way it made a lot of sense to kill off Ned. This is Westeros not Disney. He was way to rightchous, I kept yelling at my T.V., " Are you a complete idiot?!!!?? They are gonna kill your ass!".
As for Drogo, I didn't mind too much that he died. Yes he kicked ass and it would have been cool to see him in a battle. But we got three Dragons now, nuff said.
And to anyone else who has a problem with people dying in shows I say climb on Joffery's dick and have lots of blond babies.
