It was the guy's first screenplay, so I'm willing to cut him some slack, but he really didn't know how to handle his characters. Every scene involving Milk's lovers felt completely forced, a dull take on a tired cliche.
The scene where Penn picks up Franco, in particular, made no sense. Same goes for when he hooks up with Luna. The characters are just thrown at him for him to fuck and subsequently alienate with his political life. As much as the actors try to do with it, there is not really any natural chemistry between them. That whole aspect of the film felt forced and went on to completely ruin a potentially great ending.
Atleast with Franco's character we learned some backstory but with Luna that whole character was terribly written. The first time we hear of him is when he locks himself in a closet! We never found out how they met or Luna's backstory.
The box for the movie looked cool but after the first 30 seconds of the movie my friend and i popped it out of the DVD player and took it back to the video store
