Films about Identity
i was listenin to LEOG yesterday and Leon mentioned that 1999 was the single best year in film, and that it had a reoccuring string of movies that dealt with identity issues. As someone who is influenced by existentialism, id love to find some movies about identity and how people struggle with it.
so far, the ones ive seen concerning the issue have included Lost in Translation, Five Easy Pieces, Taxi Driver, the first two Toy Story movies, and to a degree I Love You Phillip Morris. are there any ones that you people like alot or would recommend?

Since i watch a lot of sci-fi the ones that come to mind for me are Blade Runner,Total Recall, Brazil, Robocop, The Lawnmower Man, A clockwork Orange, and GATTACA.
You might even want to try Face-Off or The Island.

The greatest? I don't know about that. It's a great film and one of my favourites, but would you say it's a better exploration of identity than, say, Imitation of Life?

Memento
Mulholland Drive
Black Swan
In Bruges
1999 and 2001 were both great years for films about identity: Memento and Mulholland both came out in 2001. They are probably the two best depictions of identity in film. The recent Black Swan is similar to Mulholland Dr., but its more linear and not as deep.

'99 was a great year, which is ironic because 2000 was one of the worst years ever. In any case, here are my suggestions.
Gattaca - Under-appreciated, but really great film
Memento - Although everyone's already suggested it, they're dead-on.
Lawrence of Arabia - There's nothing I could say about this that hasn't already been said.
The Wind That Shakes The Barley - More about political ideology as a function of social identity, but it follows an existential bent.
Boyz N The Hood - Snapshot of Black America in the early 90's. Pretty much a perfect film in my book.

thanks for the recommendations, guys. of the movies u suggested, i did see:
Eyes Wide Shut - i didnt really see this as a film about identity but more about sexual nature and where it draws the line between a shared experience between two people or just something of pleasure. still really good, though
Adaptation - i loved this movie. this film made me fall in love with Charlie Kaufman's writing style and makes me wanna see Being John Malkavich and Synechdoche, New York.
Brazil - i really need to rewatch this whenever i can. i recently got into George Orwell's work and id love to find more allagories to Orwell that i missed the first time i saw Brazil.
A Clockwork Orange - Kubrick's awesome. thats all i can say
Shutter Island - i saw this one on a bad date with a girl, so i couldnt really pay attention to the plot when my arm around her shoulder was losing blood flow by the second
Black Swan - again, really great film and well deserved Oscar contender, but not really about identity. i saw it as more about insanity and art-through-adversity.
