Gary LeVine posted a statusThe title is a bit of a shock title in order to get discussion started, but I've been a family guy fan since before they were canceled for the first time, but lately I've been feeling that the show has been making more and more attacks toward Christianity. Now I post this hoping for a good discussion on family guy's stance on the matter and in no way want to dive into the rights and wrongs of religion in general. But so far I am seeing a clear pattern in family guys writing direction: random joke, random joke, random joke, Christian joke, random joke, random joke, and then a long as hell unfunny speech about some issue that is completely out of character/tone of the show. Now I get family guy is going for a more atheist appeal (for some reason) but most of their religious jokes seem to be aimed at the Christian faith. Now don’t get me wrong I love South Park and have been with family guy for most of its run. The way I see it south park mixes it up for every episode and makes fun of everything equally, where family guy seems to always have a Christian joke. (Kind of the reason I never watch the Sarah Silverman program where every fucking episode had a derogatory black joke in It. but I digress this isn’t about her show) What are the thoughts of my fellow spillios? Once again no talk about the wrong/right of religion please (if we do that things may escalate). And I do wish to hear atheist opinion on the matter, so don't think im here to convert you to anything.
I post this because I just read the synopsis for the new family guy episode: When Stewie’s new best friend falls ill, Lois takes him to the hospital where she finds out he has a critical, but treatable, disease. However, the boy’s parents refuse treatment due to their religious beliefs, leaving Lois no choice but to take drastic measures to seek treatment for the boy herself. Meanwhile, Peter has a religious experience of his own
but I don't know if this will be about Christianity. so I cant really judge this episode.

Don't bitch about it.

Permalink Reply by Exzodium on February 5, 2012 at 2:29pm I don't think it's a big surprise really. The number one publicly received religion on T.V (In the U.S) is Christianity and most people are very ignorant of the traditions and beliefs of other cultures.
Compared to something like Shintoism, Christianity is something that is far easier to understand for the mass of Americans who do not discuss theology or even partake in any religious activities.
And considering there is a large amount of public history of hypocrisy, ignorance, adultery, pedophilia and misogynistic attitudes among many leaders of the various christian denominations since mass media became a firestorm in America, the entertainment industry has taken that and painted a picture were Christians are a joke, often portrayed as ignorant and sheltered individuals that fear the concept that man has progressed so far through science.
Do all Christians fit this picture? No of course not, it's as silly as the concept that all black people look alike. But to be fair, the large amount of public exposure to Christianity comes from media news coverage of Groups like the Westboro baptist church and leaders like Jim Bakker.
Movies like Red State help paint the picture further as small groups becoming radical covens of crazy. Not to mention that most of the time this is often paired with the people from the south that are viewed as unsophisticated and uneducated.
Now if you are a Christian and this upsets you, I understand, but to be fair we are talking about religion and that has always been a debate since there was a point to debate about it. Educated and powerful people will always will always be skeptical of something that has no firm basis in their eyes, and to many religion is something that is viewed to have nothing relevant to say to a world is slowly being more and more connected to it's self.
But that's just my take on it and I may be a little biased, so what do I know.
I enjoy this post the most, a bit long for my tastes. And I agree with you whole heartily. But one response I have to tag on to that is just because an image is common doesn't mean we should encourage it. One example is how Muslims were treated after 9/11 and how we all had to band together to stop the hate.
