The Halfrican posted a statusThe title is a bit of a shock title in order to get discussion started, but I've been a family guy fan since before they were canceled for the first time, but lately I've been feeling that the show has been making more and more attacks toward Christianity. Now I post this hoping for a good discussion on family guy's stance on the matter and in no way want to dive into the rights and wrongs of religion in general. But so far I am seeing a clear pattern in family guys writing direction: random joke, random joke, random joke, Christian joke, random joke, random joke, and then a long as hell unfunny speech about some issue that is completely out of character/tone of the show. Now I get family guy is going for a more atheist appeal (for some reason) but most of their religious jokes seem to be aimed at the Christian faith. Now don’t get me wrong I love South Park and have been with family guy for most of its run. The way I see it south park mixes it up for every episode and makes fun of everything equally, where family guy seems to always have a Christian joke. (Kind of the reason I never watch the Sarah Silverman program where every fucking episode had a derogatory black joke in It. but I digress this isn’t about her show) What are the thoughts of my fellow spillios? Once again no talk about the wrong/right of religion please (if we do that things may escalate). And I do wish to hear atheist opinion on the matter, so don't think im here to convert you to anything.
I post this because I just read the synopsis for the new family guy episode: When Stewie’s new best friend falls ill, Lois takes him to the hospital where she finds out he has a critical, but treatable, disease. However, the boy’s parents refuse treatment due to their religious beliefs, leaving Lois no choice but to take drastic measures to seek treatment for the boy herself. Meanwhile, Peter has a religious experience of his own
but I don't know if this will be about Christianity. so I cant really judge this episode.

yeah they make fun of EVERY religion but MOST of the joke they make seem to be against Christians.
Permalink Reply by Matthew Mustin on January 25, 2012 at 8:45pm It's anti-religion. Christianity is just the easiest one to go after since that's the one most people (including myself) practice. Seth MacFarlane has made no secret that he is an Atheist. I do agree that it's waaaayyy too much, though. Personally, even if I was an Atheist, I would still feel like it was too much. I hate when something tries to slam it's "message" down on you constantly without subtly (or, in this case, humour), even if it's a "message" I agree with. So, ultimately, it's against all religions, they just don't know how to make jokes about any of the other ones.
P.S. "Not All Dogs Go To Heaven". I think that episode encapsulates everything you're talking about.

Permalink Reply by Nightshadow on January 25, 2012 at 9:13pm Im an agnostic, and one of the reasons I no longer watch family guy was do to the VERY predictable anti religion jokes.
Permalink Reply by Cambo on January 29, 2012 at 6:50am well considering that family guy is made by americans for americans, along with the fact that something like 60% of america is 'christian' then yes they are going to make fun of it. does it matter though? I mean they make fun of everything that is the point of the show, it doesn't take itself seriously and neither should you.
and in that kinda lies the problem family guy has been trying to take itself reallllllllllyyyy seriously as of late and im getting sick of its stupid messages. now this episode was about christian scientists, and people have been making fun of them since the stone ages, but that doesn't make me at ease.
Permalink Reply by Freddy The Secret Asian Man on January 30, 2012 at 5:23am Surprisingly this episode wasn't about "religion is stupid and fuck them". They actually wrote good dialogue in the last act and took the high road instead of the usual stance they do.
