I recently got done playing Mass Effect 2 and the way they present their environments get me fascinated into the story and action of the game, had it been another generic sci-fi "alien" world setting, I probably wouldn't have been as interested.
However, there are times I wish a certain environment would be the main setting or at least more of it explored in a certain game. So let me ask you all, what sort of environments do you wish to see more of in games or a setting that hardly gets attention in video games?
1. Victorian-era urban city. I really want to do an RPG or a shooter in 1860-1900 London or New York or Paris. It's like we may see brief flashes of this in other games, but none of them really made it their main setting. I want to be a detective going after Jack the Ripper in White Chapel or be caught in the corruption of Tammany Hall.
2. High tech city. What I mean by this is playing in a city that looks like Tokyo or Seoul or Shanghai in terms of architecture, lighting, and political intrigues. I'm sick of playing in the stereotypical American/Western city that looks the same to me.
3. Arctic mountains. For some reason, I enjoy these parts in games that involve multiple climate levels like desert, tropical/jungle, etc.
4. Amusement Parks. I want more games that takes place in these things, not gonna lie.

Permalink Reply by Talvi on July 12, 2012 at 5:57am I would love to see more Cyberpunk enviroments like Deus Ex had. Not just futuristic clinical looking cities but actual cyberpunk bladerunner type shit. I am so curious to what CDProject (makers of The Witcher) have in store for us with their version of the Pen and Paper rpg Cyber Punk that will be their next game.
But what I mostly want are Open world games that actually feel alive, Rockstar does and excellent job with the GTA series and did an amazing job with Red Dead (granted there was alot of desert there but the towns felt alive). Another great example where the atmosphere of the enviroment was absolutly great was in The Witcher 2. All the npcs seemed to react to your presence. When it started to rain they looked for shelter and stuff like that.
But for me the one game that where the enviroment was near perfect is Shadow of the Colossus. The Colossi felt so much part of the world you were in. The exploration, the loneliness... Just all out great.
As long as game are done right I don't really mind what kind of envirment it has.
Permalink Reply by DHood90 on July 13, 2012 at 10:47pm I'd love to see that too, I don't think that outside of a few old MS-DOS games, there hasn't been a videogame that did this.

Permalink Reply by Rolina on July 13, 2012 at 9:26am We've got all these FPSes set in future/modern settings, with science all around... but oh, what I'd give to see a fantasy setting for once. You see magic guns from time to time in fiction, so I'd love to see a game where I'm part of a magic artillery squad going in and clearing out places or waging war against an enemy country. I think it'd be a pretty fun change on it.
The key, of course, is to keep it as an FPS. Skyrim may be in first person, and you might be able to use crossbows now sure, but it's still an RPG in terms of how it's played, not an FPS.
At the same time, I'd love to see a sci-fi JRPG. Instead of MP or whatever, it'd be your ammo (for ballistics), battery energy (for energy weapons), or fuel (for chemical weapons). It doesn't even have to be a flat turn based system, either, something a little more action oriented would be fine. I know call me crazy for wanting to see RPGs and FPSes trade settings for once, but by golly I think it'd be fun as hell if done right.

Permalink Reply by Rolina on July 13, 2012 at 10:29am Like I said, I want to see one done right. FPSes are oversaturated with Scifi, and RPGs are oversaturated with fantasy. I'd like to see a balance of both, to be honest.
And yeah, I know about the jRPG stagnation problem. They need to focus more on story than they have been, they've let their quality really slide over the years. But I remember back when we had Wild Arms... whatever happen to that franchise? A nice jRPG with guns instead of your typical swords, it was really fun too. But sadly, we don't get to see much of that anymore, neither in literary genre nor in quality of narrative...

Permalink Reply by Rolina on July 13, 2012 at 9:22pm I see, well god forbid me from having an opinion then. How dare I want to see a sci-fi approach actually make it in the states. You're right, we should just do whatever the hell China wants us to do. What ever was I thinking?
