Bad news everybody. FOX has decided that the second season of Dollhouse will be its last. There will be a total of 13 and then it will be no more. So when it comes back on the air in December there will be nine more episodes. Figures something like this would happen since it is a FOX show and they already screwed Whedon over with Firefly. Maybe the fans can save it, allthough the only show I can think of where a petition worked was with Roswell.

Well, it worked for Jericho. The only problem is that after getting back on the air, they rushed it to get it back OFF the air again.
Look, here's the problem with Whedon's stuff lately. It's sort of BORING at first, and it takes too long to get you into it. Everyone wants to say how great Whedon is for making TV shows. The only problem is, that the people that claim to love his shows DON'T WATCH THEM until it's too late to save them from being canceled. Buffy/Angel worked because they started off BEING action packed and in your face with how fresh they were. Firefly, while enjoyable, never got people to give it a chance, and the critics wanted to call it "Buffy meets Western meets Outer space" when it was on the air. Dollhouse is still sort of riding that "Buffy-vibe" with the casting, and it doesn't work.
Look, I know that people enjoy the show, and it has some moments that were worth watching. But the truth of the matter is, there isn't a show today that can "build up" to something like they used to. You've got to come out swinging with something "catching" to get the numbers to watch the show THEN build up to something after you've got the fanbase to keep you on the air. While Whedon DOES have the talent to tell a story that is interesting, he does NOT have the ability to make it "snap" from the start anymore. I don't know if that's ego or if that he lost the "touch". All I know is that hearing that Dollhouse is going to get canceled doesn't surprise me after hearing people talking about the first 5 shows.
Fair enough, but he has always been about creating a mythology with his shows. As slow as season two has been I'm more then willing to see where it goes, however I have to admit that I only watched the first three or four episodes of season one when it first came on and gave up on it only to watch it on DVD and get hooked, but now that we're in a second season I'm with it. I have been wondering when they're going to dive back into the whole Alpha storyline though. Now that it's going to be going off the air will they be able to tie things up or will they end up pulling an Angel and just leave things on a massive cliffhanger.
While I am a Whedon fan I'm not defending him JUST because it's a Whedon show. If all shows need to jump in head first and go full steam ahead or get cancelled then I say they should also take Flashfoward off the air. While I have been watching that and interested to see where it actually goes there really hasn't been much happening and is kind of just meh. I am more then willing though to take the slow ride if there is indeed a payoff.
All well, Ii guess it will just be one more hour a week I will be free to do something else like exercise, read a book, take a nape, or play some video games I have that I haven't touched.

And that my friend is why it is getting canceled. Like you, I sort of gave up on it during the first season too, and now that the second season is here.... I just don't care about it anymore. It's because we (and many more) left it behind and the numbers are not there to support it going further. I just hope that they don't try to do a "Firefly/Serenity" situation and try to make a movie that feels like it's nothing more than a Rushed TV-Show. And yes, I enjoyed Serenity as much as the next "Fan" did. But honestly, that's all it was... a Rushed TV-Show.
Just like Roswell was, Just like Jericho was, Just like Farscape was...
When a show gets off the air, and comes back in one way or another, it's normally just a "Rushed" story to give it an 'ending'.
To add to what you've stated, I think shows with a slow start are hurt by the massive amount of media out there. While your free-to-air options might be limited, there's cable, movie rental, content streaming (even from network sites). If something doesn't grab me soon enough, I'm jumping ship and hopefully catching hold of something that's going to have me involved in the story and characters without me feeling like I may be wasting my time.
They gave the show a second shot but there just wasn't enough people watching. i don't know why Whedon tires network tv, he needs to go on USA or TNT where a show with only a couple million viewers can be considered a hit, I wasn't the biggest fan of Dollhouse, I thought it had limitless potential but the execution was bland to say the least.
