I suggest you start with the 2005 series as thats when it started up again, then you can watch some of the older episodes.

I agree start with the first season of the new series and go from thair

The first season of the 'new' series is the best place to start for a newcomer. it covers all the basics of history, the Doctor and what he does through the eyes of Rose.

Fontaine, you're about to start on the longest running sci-fi TV series EVER. Over 27 years of it. Follow the new series for the first...three seasons I say...then come back to us. We'll fill you in on the rest if you're still liking it.

No doubt I just netflixed the first ep in season one of the new shows. Seems cool so far.
By and far, my favorite episodes of that season is the WW2 2-part "The Empty Child" and "The Doctor Dances"
I completely agree, arguably the best Dr Who story ever. A fantastic central idea, creepy, great characters, humour, what's not to like?
My two older boys weren't too sure about Doctor Who until they saw "The Empty Child". They never knew that being scared could be so much fun. Even now, when they're off to bed one of them will turn off the lights and say to the other, "are you my mummy?"

And you have to say it in that complete innocent child's voice.....'shivers'

My favorite part...the part that still tears me up...is when he figures out how to save them. The look of absolute hope and then happiness on his face. His little prayer to himself "Oh just this once...give me a day like this..." and then his battle cry of joy "Once...just this once...EVERYBODY LIVES!!!!!"

I have been a fan a long, long time. I knew EXACTLY how much the end of that story meant to the Doctor, and the writers knew how much it meant to me. It was at that moment, I knew the show was back..and I welcomed it back like a long lost but dear friend.

My former roommate started me on "Blink", "Silence in the Library/Forest of the Dead", and "Girl in the Fireplace".  I thought all of those were excellent episodes, but I honestly think that they do a pretty good job about explaining things to newcomers in each episode.  There's always usually a point when the Doctor sums up whatever alien they're dealing with in a few sentences, and that's all you really need (most of the time, anyway).

Also, am I the only one who thought Waters of Mars was fucking amazing?
umm...welll....it was good, really good...but maybe not amazing. It was a good insight to what and why the Doctor does not interfere with history....
yes. it was shiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiit.
