Permalink Reply by Samuel on June 6, 2012 at 11:15pm Totally had a different story running through my head when I heard about the project, and so the trailer was slightly disappointing.
I imagined a bunch of southern plantation owners getting together to make their best slaves participate in a battle royale, the winning plantation owners gets a cash prize and the winning slave gets his freedom. But it doesn't even occur to them that Jamie Foxx, winner of one of these fights, would want to fight his way back south to free his wife.

Permalink Reply by Lab Rat on June 12, 2012 at 12:31am There is nothing I’ve seen in the trailer that’s compelling me to see the movie. Is it revisionist western? Is it modern day blaxploitation? Buddy-cop actioner with a period setting? Are those attempts at levity and are they supposed to be ‘dry’?
I’m not sure what direction I’m supposed to be pulled in and the end result is repulsion at this point. Maybe more (or different) footage will change my view.
Permalink Reply by Lab Rat on June 12, 2012 at 1:03am I'm glad I'm not the only one ready to pull the plug. I have enjoyed some of his work but he falls afoul in so many aspects for me as a viewer recently that I'm having a hard time being confident going in. It seems like he's got some sort of formula in his head and he just plugs in variables, expecting it to work. Let's see, I'll take a someone historically weak and set them in a dangerous 'fish out of water' scenario have them fight for a cliche reward while trying to bring down Boss X that the audience is supposed to be preconditioned to hate. If I sat around and recorded a weeks worth of pub dialogue, I could write a Tarantino script.
Permalink Reply by Lab Rat on June 12, 2012 at 7:31am So Tarantino movies are like film appetisers? Watch his stuff then go for something satisfying.I know what you mean. While Jackie Brown was good and all, I can telll you I've seen individual episodes of Hill Street Blues which were better. If NBC tacked on and extra half hour of people yelling obscenities and Joyce Davenport getting banged in a cramped kithcen, Tarantino would be writing Detroit 9000 slash fiction.
By the way, Kill Bill formula = Takes a woman (comatose rape victim, no less) and set them in a modern day samurai/ninja (chanbura) scenario have them fight for revenge and her stolen child while trying to bring down her evil ex and his viper assassin gang.
The more I think about it the more his movie seem like pages from a mad libs done by someone with no friends and unlimited access to only the action section of the video store.
Permalink Reply by CoHostlovesmysugarlumps on June 18, 2012 at 2:59pm I am going into this open minded. It has potential to be a badass movie but it also had the potential to be horrible, depending on how far off the deep end QT has gone. Foxx to me looks like he is going to be fun to watch. I actually have always enjoyed him in stuff he is in. He can do Drama/action okay and he is great in comedy so I think in this role he should be pretty good. I am crossing my fingers.
Permalink Reply by Glumpuddle on June 19, 2012 at 5:21pm I have a feeling that this trailer does not give an accurate impression of the film.
