I'd really like to hear Leon's take on the deal. I remember a few LEOGs where he has brought up the fact that some of his friends in the industry had warned him about trying to pursue work on The Incredible comics because of Disney. Does anyone else remember those conversations?
Is Disney buying Marvel a good or bad thing? Well, on the surface it isn't. But that's ONLY because Disney is going to wait and see what characters are PROFITABLE first. Then, when the popularity of characters are charted for making profits or not, they will start to DROP the "non-producing" characters. Meaning, out of the roughly 5000 characters in the Marvel Universe, you can see several of them being SHELVED and never returning again. If you doubt that, look at the MUPPETS and tell me where The Swedish Chef, Sam The Eagle, Robin (Kermit's Nephew) and Dr. Teeth and his band have all gone? So far, it's only Kermit, Miss Piggy, and Animal that I've seen lately outside of their Direct-to-Video and TV shows.
Secondly, look at Disney's HISTORY of using characters to market stuff. You know as well as I do that Marvel's more popular characters WILL be turned into WHORES to the Disney machine to sell merchandise. It's going to be about the PRODUCTS SOLD by the characters, NOT the products made WITH the characters. Doubt that? Then you really have forgotten about the Timon & Pumbaa whoring out Shows, Lunchboxes, Videos, Other Movies, and other products like bedsheets etc, etc.
Third, the argument that "Well, Warner Brothers owns DC". Yeah, but is Warner Brothers KNOWN for effecting the properties they buy and ALTERING the way those other property characters are handled and drawn? Well, if you think the answer is "No, Warner Brothers doesn't change DC", then I HIGHLY suggest you go back to comics printed before 1969 and see how MUCH has changed since then in the way they are made, the subject matter and the way the characters are handled. It took Warner Brothers over 20 years and 4 movies and numerous TV appearances to get ONE character right (Batman), had numerous TV appearances and 2 films right of another character (Superman), NEVER had a movie for Wonder Woman, but did have TV appearances, same can be said for The Flash, Green Lantern, Captain Marvel, Green Arrow, etc.etc.etc. So, knowing already that WB has messed up THEIR owning of DC, who here really thinks that Disney is going to pump out Marvel-related movies that will be WORTH A DAMN?!
I said it before, and I'll say it again. The "immediate" differences at Marvel will be NOTHING. They are going to take 2-3yrs to get everything settled as far as characters making profits, property rights in the hands of other companies, and production costs for Marvel's monthly comics. In the next 3-6years, you'll see "Final Issue", characters just slowly disappearing all together, and characters A & B combined into new Character C that has aspects of A & B mixed together. You'll also see the production side of Marvel being "streamlined" to the point where the issues and stories are the same, just different names and places. Marvel (as it is today) is dead, it's just going to take around 10 years to notice the differences.
Now, as far as Disney owning other companies like Touchstone, Miramax and Pixar? Well, ironically Pixar is HANDS-OFF from Disney, and THAT is why we no longer get the Toy Story and Monster Inc Pixar movies, but get the Wall-E and Up Pixar movies, because Disney's control was REMOVED from Pixar.
Miramax films? Let's ask Harvey and Bob Weinstein what it was like to work for Disney and why the LEFT Miramax when DISNEY controlled what was released under the Miramax label. See for yourself the Miramax History.
And as far as Touchstone? Well, how about the fact that "Touchstone Pictures is merely a brand and does not exist as a separate company". Read it yourself.
And if you need FURTHER proof how much Disney is going to FUCK over Marvel? Well, keep in mind that Disney OWNS ABC, ESPN, ABC Kids, ABC Family, SOAPnet. Then tell me how many times you've seen an "ABC star" or "ABC Show" WHORING something for Disney? Let's see, how many times do the "ABC lineup of shows" end up having a "family vacation at DISNEY"? How about Vanessa Williams WHORING OUT Disney themeparks while working on an ABC show "Ugly Betty"? How about America Ferrera being used in the Tinker Bell video as the voice of "Fawn"?
Welcome my friends to the days of Marvel Characters being product whores for Disney theme parks.

It's odd in a way. I feel a lot like Chig does, about a company making movies I rarely see, buying a company of comic books I rarely read... it's nothing that's going to make me miss a payment on rent.
But the HISTORY of Disney buying and controlling companies is SO blatant, I can't believe that other people aren't able to see the writing on the wall for what will happen to Marvel. Then again, half the world can't seem to get their own heads out of their asses, so I shouldn't be too surprised by anything any more.

Marvel already shamelessly whores out its characters exactly like you illustrated with Timon and Pumba.
As far as pushing unpopular characters to the background, that's exactly what I'd do to, but instead of simply letting them sit on a shelf, I'd shovel them in to a grave.
But then, I'd also kill off a lot of popular characters too, if I were put in charge of Marvel.

Hell, I'd kill them off myself just to shake up the foundation of the company. Just don't do the damn thing with Superman's death all over again. Killing a main character then within six months going "Oh, wait... he's back" type shit.
You make very good points, and most of them I agree with. However I'm sure that a lot of people remember Rowlf from The Muppets.
He wasn't a main character like Kermit or Miss Piggy, and when Jim Henson died he was pushed to a background character to pay respect. His character became almost unknown, then Disney bought it and now we've recently seen Rowlf make a slow comeback and I've seen a few web videos with him talking again. That in a way, is some proof that what you said about a lot of background characters dieing off isn't entirely true.
However all the Marvel characters I like are pretty popular and sell. Deadpool comes to mind, since he's now becoming the next Wolverine or Spider-man I'm sure they won't get rid of him. So as long as Iron Fist, Deadpool, and Daredevil are still being created I'm good. Even If they do get rid of some characters It'll probably be the one who haven't already appeared in the movies or tv shows.....which is still a heavy amount.
With recent news reports of people using Twitter to share accounts of incidents that many would consider too sensitive for such public broadcast I got to wondering. How much do you share with the world through social networking? Do you think it’s OK…
This group is for the planning of a Spill get together and party in May of 2010. New York, Jersey, D'ware, Maryland Dc and beyond. Let's hook up in the city it all started.
Matt, Jack & Jon are three eloquent young gents. They philosophize, externalize, and harmonize on the most pressing subjects of the modern age. Actually, they mostly just talk about movies and current events, but the presentation is what counts.
I have two friends who happen to be dudes. They also happen to be best friends. A particular quirk they both share is they repeat something they find funny over and over and over and over... it's funny the first couple of times, but they can't seem…
