Direct-to-DVD up for Oscar...WHAT?
Okay, so here is the list of movies submitted for consideration for the next Academy Award for Best Animated Feature. Notice anything unusual about this list?
“Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel”
“Astro Boy”
“Battle for Terra”
“Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs”
“Coraline”
“Disney’s A Christmas Carol”
“The Dolphin - Story of a Dreamer”
“Fantastic Mr. Fox”
“Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs”
“Mary and Max”
“The Missing Lynx”
“Monsters vs. Aliens”
“9”
“Planet 51”
“Ponyo”
“The Princess and the Frog”
“The Secret of Kells”
“Tinker Bell and the Lost Treasure”
“A Town Called Panic”
“Up”
Aside from the inclusion of Alvin and the Chipmunks (no big surprise considering the last one was submitted as well), Tinker Bell and the Lost Treasure, a direct-to-video movie, is up for Oscar consideration.
So when did direct-to-video movies become eligible for Oscars? If they could, why the hell didn't Warner Bros submit any of the three DC animated movies they released this year (Wonder Woman, Green Lantern First Flight, Superman/Batman Public Enemies). Is this just so they could make the list a nice even twenty (which is a record for this category by the way)?
Don't get me wrong; there is no way in hell it's getting nominated, but the fact that it is even CONSIDERED infuriates me. Nothing against Tink and her movie, but it just seems disgusting for THAT movie to be the exception to the rule.

The reason Warner Bros wouldn't put up their films for Oscar nominations is because it costs a lot of money to even try and get consideration going.
Oh and it could be because the Warner Bros films quality is ok, but no where near Oscar Worthy. It's smart not to try because they'll just get shut down. That and Public Enemies was almost complete garbage.

As I remember Tinkerbell got a theatrical run... And as I recall, as long as it opens in a theatre in San Fransisco (?) it's Oscar eligable.

As tempting as it is to throw Christmas carol in there, it wasn't animated. and 9 is a close one but it was really quite poorly written and I don't think deserves the nod. But no, I agree with you, Mark. This list is crazy and the direct to DVD's should either have a special catagory (like the oscars no one cares about that are given out on different days) or just not be included.
I really think it will come down to Up, cloudy, ponyo and princess. If any of those won I would be happy (though seriously... if up doesn't get it there is something wrong with the world.)

Obviously UP will win. What bothers me is that Tinkerbell is there, but not for the same reason as you. Wasn't Bolt released this year. It's an alright movie, but the animation is the best 3d disneys ever done without Pixar.

What I don't get is why Alvin & the Chipmunks is considered an animated film. If that's animated, then so are Transformers and 2012.
