Earlier today came official word about an “X-Men Origins: Wolverine” sequel, confirming what Hugh Jackman had already told MTV News about his plans for a follow-up to this weekend’s blockbuster. Now, MTV News has received official word that there is also a “Deadpool” solo movie in active development, with “Wolverine” actor Ryan Reynolds reprising his role as Wade Wilson, Marvel’s mutant assassin.

According to a source close to Fox, the “Deadpool” spin-off film will be produced by Lauren Shuler Donner and Marvel, and will be “a complete exploration of this unique character — his origins, his emergence as the Merc with the Mouth.” The studio is currently seeking writers for the project.

While Reynolds has already shared some half-joking ideas for what he’d like to see in a “Deadpool” solo movie, one of the post-credits scenes in “Wolverine” offered the first official clue that such a project was being considered. Prior to that, however, there was no shortage of filmmakers and comic creators chiming in to voice their support for such a spin-off, including Reynolds himself, as well as Deadpool co-creator Rob Liefeld and Fox Chairman Tom Rothman.

A project more than five years in the making, the “Deadpool” movie will feature Reynolds in the role many fans are calling the best supporting role in “Wolverine” — but now the question is likely to be: What “Deadpool” story will the movie tell?

Of course, from what I know of Deadpool, being a non-reader of any comics, I would hope that they make him the smart ass he was as the regular character at the beginning of Wolverine. I mean, why else cast Ryan Reynolds as Deadpool? He's best as the smarmy, yet lovable asshole.

Perfect summary of the Deadpool character.
HA, nice. "You don't die, do you?"
Thanks for that!

You're not wrong, thats exatly the tone a Deadpool movie needs to take to both adhere to the material and suceed. Non-stop pop-culture references, breaking the 4th wall and general zaniness.

Take your Ryan Reynolds and mix with one part Neveldine and Taylor, one part Joss Whedon and one part Yuen Wo Ping and you would have a hell of a movie.

Of course, apart from the lead there's still a huge likelihood they're going to screw up with the director, script or fight choreography. We live and dream though.
Thing is, Ryan Reynolds seems pretty fuckin' stern about keeping it close to the source material.
But then again, that almost practically means nothing considering most people are looking for the almighty dollar rather than making a good film...

High hopes though.
Brilliant.
I pray they don't get the same writers from Wolverine.
Holding out hope this won't be made.
Are ya against a Deadpool movie, or a Fox Deadpool Movie?
Cause Wolverine dug a pretty deep hole for this new movie to climb out of, and I'm betting on it failing.
Both. Rob Liefields Deathstroke ripoff does not need his own movie and the comedy route (which they would never take) wouldn't work outside of comics. I'll eat my words if a good Deadpool movie is ever made. But c'mon.
Gotta have hope.......
who the fuck am I kidding, he has laser beams for eyes.

Yeah, it's a good thing the Wolverine movie wasn't produced by Lauren Shuler Donner and Stan Lee.

... Oh wait, yes it was...
