If it's crap ... We'll tell you

English Motherfucker posted a statusAfter the recent steam sale I decided to try out the popular Dayz mod for arma II
I found it to be an interesting experience albeit it had some downsides. There were many houses/building which were just static meshes. The drops were very scarce and finding something useful from these items was also a rare occasion. Vehicles seemed impossible to find and/or require the amount of materials needed were just too much especially when you could lose it all so easily. Along with this, the inventory system was a bit of a mess and could glitch out resulting in the loss of a weapon (quite frustrating).
I found the community in game to be 80% hostile and every time I stepped foot in the city I was gunned down or 'mugged' (not really, they gave me the courtesy to tell me that they were there then shot me).
Despite these negative setbacks I still found it to be enjoyable and recommend to play with a friend for a better experience. I'm sure this game will get better with time.
so are there any fellow Spillio's who have played and want to share their experiences with the game? feel free to discuss.

By yourself the game quickly becomes a game of avoiding cities or being extremely cautious of everyone and everything. The game lacks rules and restriction and it has become pretty much a deathmatch game with the zombies being an annoyance. Pretty much everyone as you said shoots on sight even if you have just spawned and dont even have any loot for them to take.
There are no consequences. I played DayZ in it's early days before reddit and the bigger sites took hold of it and attracted alot of the so called COD people. And back then there was still a global chat in which everyone on the map could to talk to each other. Granted it takes away a bit of the solitude but it was a more friendly enviroment. People talked about where they were if they needed help or were offering help. But ofcourse there were the whiners who complained when they got shot by a bandit. But that gave everyone else a heads up on who the bandit was and made if harderf or said bandits to lure people to go places. And also back the game use a humanity system, if you killed someone if you drop and your player model changed to a bandit model. That way when people saw you had the skin or saw someone with that bandit skin they either shot that guy or avoided him all together.
I agree on the vehicles, i have never even come across a car or bicycle to fix let alone a helicopter. I did find a crashed heli once but it was already looted so it was useless. I'm always so jealous of the pictures and videos of people with entire camps full of vehicles and helicopters when I have been across the map several times on foot.
The inventory while for the first time seems clunky and confusing once you get used it it's actually a pretty handy thing. The mod is for a military simulator which came out 3 years ago. You can't expect games with this specific niche to have everything as fluent as the triple A military FPS' of these days.
But in the end this game grew on me. Not DayZ but Arma 2 itself. I have only gone back to check it out recently but have not seriously played it.
I'm basically playing normal ARMA2 Domination multiplayer maps. 40 people take over 8 towns filled with AI resistance while having optional side missions to complete. This is where the game shines. The teamwork, the strategy. You have people who like to be designated pilots and all they do is tranport troops or vehicles from objective to objective. You have medics, squad leaders, engineers etc and ofcourse snipers (still too many people pick up a sniper rifle and thing their job is to kill as many moving targets as possible not checking if they shoot friendlies).
Since I bought the game for DayZ I have almost clocked 300 hours to this game and the majority of those hours are for the normal ARMA2 Operation Arrowhead multiplayer.
Permalink Reply by Cambo on July 27, 2012 at 9:10pm I definitely agree that playing with a friend makes it much more playable. had a very long play session last night whilst using Skype with a few buddies, just having a good conversation makes the game better. The experience of running into a random survivor and seeing what they will do to you or having a pack of zombies chasing after you and trying to get them to chase a friend instead was enjoyable.
The sense of adventure this Mod gives is also quite interesting although the map that is used is quite limited. I haven't tried traditional Arma yet but I may give it a shot. I couldn't get single player to run properly after installing the beta patch and dayz, hopefully that's not the case for multiplayer.
Permalink Reply by Talvi on July 28, 2012 at 9:53am There is alot to be seen on Chernarus, the map DayZ is played on but yes it is limited when it comes to the number of houses that can be entered. And right now there is not enough material that can be used to set up a proper camp, yea a few tents and a bit of barbed wire fencing can get you a little stronghold but its not enough.
And I wish they made it so that zombies can't enter closed doors, now they just walk through doors making hiding in an apartment complex or house totally pointless other than hiding from other players.
The only thing I've done in singleplayer is the tutorial to learn a bit about some more basic controls. Haven't done any of those missions yet. The fun is in the multiplayer teamwork and cooperation.
