D.C.'s New 52 ..... the shocks, surprises and dissappointments

Well I've read a handful of them and was shocked to find that TWO comic books.... in the New 52.in my top 5.. yes TWO which  star female superheroes (these being BatGirl and Catwoman .. both excellent trades).

For me, I read New 52 Animal man and I didn't see what all the fuss was about, weird art and plot does not make a great comic.

New 52 Green Lantern was ok, Aquaman was better but Wonder Woman was not great I thought.

New 52 Batman Court of the Owls comes recommended.

Surprises: Wonder Woman, Aquaman

Shocks: Starfire and Catwoman controversy.

Disappointments: Justice League

Pretty much this, I would add Batman to suprises. Snyder's Batman run has been suprisingly good.

The only reason i did not add batman was because i expected it to be good.

Surprises: Aquaman, Animal Man (these two were more pleasant surprises as i had high hopes for the books and love both characters), Swamp Thing, Resurrection Man, Batman: Dark Knight (first storyarc).

other books like Catwoman, Wonder Woman, Batgirl, Justice League Dark etc. i knew i would like because I love those characters.

Shocks: the changes. no Donna Troy, no Raven, no new teen titans team, zeus is Wonder Woman's father, Black Canary is no longer the daughter of Dinah Drake but IS Dinah Drake the Black Canary from the 40s, Batgirl not being Oracle (which is also a disappointment) beast boy is RED (i get what they are doing but still), all these new gay characters (i'm gay myself and i think they are over doing it) how good Earth 2 is. the only book i read day of release, beautiful art and mysteries galore.

disappointments: Voodoo (read Jim Lee's original Wildcats, better yet they should have HAD Jim Lee do this book), Deathstroke, Batman and Detective comics (both boring, read every month and i cant tell you one thing that happened), Nightwing, Hawk and Dove being cancelled, Justice League, Ravagers, Legion Lost and Legion of Super Heroes, both Superman books, how they are portraying Zatanna (she seems wet behind the ears so i have to assume she's new with her powers but she was once one of the most powerful magic users if not the most powerful) the treatment of Madame Xanadu in Justice League Dark (she's just a waste space there since it became John Constatine and the Gang even though its HER team) Green Arrow, Justice League International, Hawkman, Black Hawks, that there is no Robin or Red Robin book. one of the  most consistently good runs was Tim Drake's Robin and Red Robin series. give him another solo please

Suprises: the ability to make so many obsure characters into hit comic series, Aquaman, Swampthing, Animal Man, Firestorm, Andrew Bennett from I,vampire, Batwing. Scott Snyder really stepping up as a major writer in the New 52

Shocks: The joker getting his face cut off and coming back, Justice League Dark being really good, Constatine coming to new 52

Disappointments: The ending of so many great comic runs, the same stuff we've always seen with superman, Alot of the series were canceled and replaced, which shows it may not have been the best strategy for a universe wide reboot.

Suprises: Aquaman, Animal Man, Frankenstein, Demon Knights, Supergirl, Earth 2

Shocks: Wonder Woman, Starfire, Catwoman

Disappointments: Justice League, JLI getting canceled, Superman title, Superboy, Teen Titans, World's Finest

As good as expected: Action Comics, Snyder's Batman, JLI, Legion of Superheroes

Surprises: Aquaman and All-Star Westerns. I like Aquaman. The hero is about as powerful and tough as Wonder Woman out of the water, and in it he's nearly a match for Superman. He has the ability to communicate and influence aquatic life. Oh, and he's the ruler of a technologically advanced nation that controls 70% of the planet that is at least 80 years ahead of any nation on the surface. He's also a seasoned fighter and general, highly intelligent and capable of understanding and using the most advanced tech, and even has extensive mystical knowledge. Stupid memes and Superfriends be damned, Aquaman is a badass of the first degree. It's good to see them take him seriously again.

ASW has been a surprise because I didn't expect this to be decent, much less good. It looks like DC really DID want to take a good shot at it, and it has paid off.

Shocks: the haphazard approach to the histories and background, and the lack of explinations why. It's difficult for older fans to understand what is still viable and what is gone, and newer fans feel disconnected because there was no progression in story. hints just 'happened' in the past, and the comics started as if they had been going on for years now. The current history feels fake and forced.

Disappointments: so many...so so many....
-Batman: Yes I do not like this. they have continued to make his books darker and darker, while cramming him into as many titles as possible, despite the fact that his own books make him so busy, there is no way he could possibly make time for them. Also, the Arkham idea is pretty silly now, with the usual villains getting so violent and dark, that it's hard to accept they aren't just given the death penalty or been shot by the cops. And don't get me started on Talon...

-Batgirl: ok, WHAT THE FUCK?!? Stephanie Brown was a massive shot in the arm for the character. ell-liked and popular with fans, well-written and a return to something that Batman lacks...being a fucking DETECTIVE. so, of course they wrote her out and brought Barbara back. Umm...ok...and now the book bores me.

-The Teen Titans: maybe the best team in the DC universe, the characters have been strip-mined, re-written and basically defaced. What happened to Starfire makes me want to beat that writer to tears if I ever bump into him.

-Superman: The best hero DC has, and they just can't seem to get him right anymore. the recent LEOG as of this post made a lot of great story ideas for him that are FAR better than his writing in the last 5 years. But instead of allowing Supes to be the moral compass of other heroes, they need to make him either a prick or a clueless brute. He is neither...even Batman has acknowledged on many occasions that Superman represents the best of humanity and is someone to admire, someone HE admires. It makes reading about him now painful.

-Justice League Dark: potential...and yet the members make no sense together, the book is a mess and why Constantine hasn't botch slapped them all by now baffles me.

Suprises:  Demon Knights, Swamp Thing, Animal Man, I Vampire, and Aquaman.

Shocks: Starfire.  The haphazard way they've tried to squeeze some Wildstorm characters into this universe.  With the exception of Stormwatch, I think the rest of it just feels completely random.  The lack of a clear continuity is absolutely frustrating.

Disappointments:  Prior to 52 my favorite DC books were probably Birds of Prey and Secret Six.  Then 52 happened and Simone writes Fury of Firestorm, which did nothing for me, and Batgirl, which I think is okay but not as good as the Stephanie Brown run that came before it.  Teen Titans / Superboy / Ravagers is one story spread way too thin.  Two very different Superman books and I could care less about either one of them and I think I read they are going to add a third one shortly.  Only time in the new 52 I can recall caring about Superman was the most recent issue of Justice League which has for the most part been fairly meh as well.  Starting to lose interest in the Green Lantern books (I've already lost interest in the Red Lantern book).  They had some decent ideas at the onset of the 52 only to dive right back into the well with the Guardians as the biggest thorn in the Corps side (again!).  That and this Rise of the Third Army storyline is soooooooo slow.  None of the bat books really jumped out at me.  I enjoyed the first couple issues of BatWing and Batwoman was always good but the rest I couldn't care less about.  I also liked the Flash run before flashpoint but it went sour pretty quickly into the new 52.

I'm still reading through everything but so far almost everything is a let down except for Justice League which was almost good!

I haven't read a good comic in years, all the good comics turn out to be better than the usual crap. Everything has disappointed me from the new 52.
