Now in terms of story anyone who's seen the trailer or generally has an idea of what happens when 3 teenagers getting superpowers can pretty much see where this is going. However what matters is execution and new ways of telling that story and boy does this film do that well. The earlier parts of the movie play like a series of comedic youtube clips interwoven with a study of not just their powers but the 3 friends relationship as it grows and goes through the motions however in the second half when things get serious...oh boy
On a budget of 15 million this film uses that money well the CG is only not up to par when the characters are manipulating smaller objects earlier in the film but as the objects get bigger the effects get better and from the final act it's obvious where the money went.
Now had this film been shot like a standard movie I would have probably given it a full price however the inovation that goes into the camera scenes in this film is truly unique.
The cameras serve to make you unseen member of the group peering in and having an in depth conversation or flying up in the air with your buddies, in fact the flying scenes are some of the best I've seen in terms of camera work. Other scenes such as conversations are made better by the simple solution of having 2 cameras and switching the POV, mirrors are used so we can see characters who are out of shot, and things get even more interesting when the characters carry the camera using telekinesis. However the real innovation comes in that chronicle is the first found footage film I have seen where they take advantage of the fact that cameras are everywhere from security footage news reports to the fact that everyone of us whether its a phone or an ipod has a recording device in our pocket. It is for this innovation I am giving this film
BETTER THAN SEX
This film is no doubt the best release of 2012 so far and has in my opinion brung a new frehsness to the superhero genre and a new way to shoot action found footage films in the future
