To me it seems Johnny Depp makes a conscious effort to never play the same character, which, as an actor, I strive to do as well. When you know you have range, you want to be able to show it, and Johnny Depp wants to convey his range as an actor. The problem is, he's yet to play a really good role. Once he's given a non-Tim Burton role where he can get a good emotional scene or monologue for once, I believe that's when he will really shine. If not, at least he has great range.

Yeah that's what I want to see from depp, Fuck Tim Burton in the nose.

He's not a GREAT actor, but he's not a bad actor either. He's competent, but that doesn't mean he couldn't use improvement.

He's a fantastic actor!
It's only in Terminator Salvation I can think of him giving a mediocre performance.
I still think it's kind of dumb that people bitch so much about the bat-voice in TDK (I didn't like it either), but it was "enhanced" in post production, something Bale had no control over.

He's gotten this bad rep for being too intense and playing only tough guys, and people should really watch some of his other work:

The Machinist
Rescue Dawn
American Psycho
The Prestige
I'm Not There

All very different performances there.
