So everyone and their mother has at least heard of Borat, the offensive yet loveable foreign character played by the comedian, but he was sooo 2006. Now in 2009 we get another horribly offensive dude by the name of Bruno, an Austrian fashion designer that's blatantly gay and wonderfully clueless. He does what every normal celebrity does, make videos, shop, adopt an African child, but you get to see it on film!
In my opinion, Borat was better than I expected it to be and Bruno will probably be good too. Half the point of these characters is to offend people and get a reaction so I'll set the un-PC-ness aside, but still I wonder how far Sasha Baron Cohnen will go and whether it'll be funny or not. The trailer looks hilarious and I've been following him on Twitter and most of the updates are so ridiculous and wonderful that the movie BETTER be good. I'm counting on seeing it as a Matinee when it comes out so even if it's worse than I expect, I won't be too disappointed.
I never really got the appeal of SBC. I know his characters are supposed to be tools for satire, but other than that, I don't find funny as find him to be quite annoying.
Cohen annoys me. I'm sorry but I cannot stand him at all. I find him gross and sickening. I really don't find him funny at all. The only time he was funny was in Madagascar.
I found Borat and now the sneak peaks of Bruno as a social satire of how crazy we are as a society. Ha no one was safe from Borat and no one will be safe from Bruno either. Whether it's bad or good. Our local newscaster was in Borat! He goes to my church! Ha I started freaking out.
I can just imagine them watching Borat and going "Holy shit, you mean that institutionally stupid foreign dude was actually a character played by a medium-popularity actor. We just got punk'd bro."
I'm with MDS on this one. I have no intention of seeing any movie with Sasha Baron Cohen unless it's a movie with actual writing, because he does well whenever he's playing one of his character with written dialogue(he was the only good thing about Sweeney Todd besides Sondheim's music).
Sacha Baron Cohen cracks me the hell up! To me this guy is a genius in the way he can stay in character. It confuses me a little why some people would feel "insulted".
