Boxing VS MMA: A Faux Rilvary Poplurized By Fanboys

Note: An updated version of a blog I've written at a boxing site

I consider myself as someone who tries to be objective as I possibly can, and since I was labeled a Boxing nuthugger on an MMA forum and an MMA nuthugger on a Boxing forum, then I've pretty much succeeded in that. This also proves that fanboys of both sports share a similar level of ignorance and blind loyalty towards their sports and blind hate towards the other.

All this began ever since the first UFC, when the UFC as part of their promoting strategy took shots at the sport of "Sweet Science" and then years later Dana White opened his big egotistic mouth, not to the mention all the BS spat out by MMA fanboys claiming Boxing is "dying" while also refusing to admit that the lack of Boxing fundamentals is one of MMA's weakest points. But Boxing promoters and fanboys are no better, MMA has been labeled as a human cockfight (weird since even in the early years, UFC prohibited illegal moves like eye gouges.) and even labeling MMA fighters as bums, street thugs or whatever the hell they want to call them.

The only sort of realistic existance of a feud between MMA and Boxing is PPV buyrate/TV rate wise but that's about it, there's no way you can pit a boxer against a grappler and call it MMA vs Boxing since it's basically an MMA fight and or have them fight in a boxing rules fight and call it an MMA vs Boxing fight since it's basically a Boxing fight, the same thing applies when you put a grappler against a kickboxer. MMA stands for Mixed Martial Arts, and Boxing is a martial art. To compare both is just stupid. So in reality, if you take away the PPV buyrate argument, the whole rilvary is really just a faux one created by the blind loyalists of both combat sports.

It's not as if all MMA fighters are elitist jerks to Boxers, Quinton Jackson is a boxing fan, Vera looks up to Pacquiao, Diego Sanchez chose to train conditioning with De La Hoya, Gomi said he wouldn't last against DLH in a boxing match, Frank Shamrock said on Inside MMA he only watches boxing and does not watch MMA outside of what he broadcasts. He goes on to mention how superior boxers standup is and that there is only one, possibly two MMA fighters in the world that have strong boxing skills. Boxing stars sang praises for MMA as well, such as Ray Jones Jr, George Foreman, De La Hoya, Manny Pacquiao, Suger Ray Leonard and even Mayweather Jr after that whole issue of him bashing the sport years ago. Howard Davis Jr. trains MMA now. He's also helping MMA fighters with their Boxing over at American Top Team. He has a great deal of respect for the sport.

It's not so hard to like the best from both worlds, people. I've been a boxing fan longer but I also appreciate MMA and think it's a good combat sport. I'm definetly sure that old school boxing legends like Jack Dempsy would've showed better appreciation for MMA.

Nice blog.

Nothing, I mean Nothing beats a great boxing match. I think the reason why boxing has been soured upon is the ridiculous amount of belts. No, I am not talking about the different weight classes but the different titles within the heavyweight division. For me, the middleweights are the most exciting.

As for UFC, oh it has its problems as well. You know that Randy Couture/Brock Lesner match didn't go as planned. Compared to boxing, its a baby and it doesn't have the depth that boxing has. But it does draw WWE fans sick of redundant faux grappling.

I actually have tried to follow both sports, but I do believe both are two different animals, each with its own top contenders. I slightly favor boxing more, only because I grew up watching the Tyson matches.

The only real problem I have with MMA is all the down time rolling around on the ground "hugging". It's not as bad as in the early days of UFC, going twenty minutes just ground and pound. Some people even make distinction in MMA with the cage fight style versus the Pride Fight ring style, but I don't really mind, since I mostly see the fights on dvd,not live.

So, to answer, I like both. Really wish they could incorporate a escrima/stick fighting into MMA, but I highly doubt that it'll ever see the day audiences can see it via pay-per-view.

I agree with everything that was said except when Frank acts as if it hasn't progressed much. Look at the Matt Hughes vs Joyce Gracie fight. What ufc champion is one dimensional now except Brock because he's just starting?

Brock isn't one dimensional he has a solid stand up and take downs

Reply to This

Take downs go hand in hand with wrestling, and his standup is medicocre only due to his power. People aren't too concerned that he's gonna try a headkick, and with his size and speed, leg kicks are almost ruled out as well..... ALMOST.... His striking seems limited, and thats why I would call him uno dimensional... HOWEVER, I do believe he is becoming less and less one dimensional every day he is in training.

Yeah, he has a lot of potential since he began training when he's still healthy. I was surprised during the Hearing fight where his early move was a punch to the face, I beat Hearing was surprised too since a lot of people expected Brock use his wrestling background to go for a takedown.

My problem with his striking is.... with all this power, he hasn't ko'd anybody. What is all that power good for if you don't have the technique to throw it properly? My other big problem with Brocks game is his cardio. I agree the man is a freak of nature that works out insanely hard, but the fact is with muscle you either have strength or indurance. I seriously question this guys effectiveness in the late second or third round

if ufc has taught us anything it is that a mixture of boxing and grappling is the best way to win a price fight. being some one that has trained in martial arts and can box i would be more inclined to say that a mma fighter is in a better position but solely on the basis that he has a better trained lower body can (possibly) do holds etc.

However i agree with your statement the whole who would win thing is obscured. and you make a very good point about the whole who's rules they would play by. the whole verses thing is often a load of bullshit.
