If it's crap... We'll tell you

Most series that I read have a consistent quality to them. But some have an incredible dropoff in the later books that's hard to believe. Mine would be the Maximum Ride series. I enjoyed them to a degree, but it seems that at the fourth book, James Patterson gutted it and shoved in Global Warming crap. And the fifth book was no better. But that's just me. What's yours?

Oh yes, they DO exist.

God, those books were HORRIBLE (why even bother writing them in the first place?)

Compared to Jurassic Park, I didn't think The Lost World lived up to the hype. Of course, the first one was sort of about a system-wide collapse of a conrolled environment, whereas The Lost World was just a bunch of people chronicling how the dinosaurs had survived for six years. JP had far more suspense than the sequel.

I didn't like Forever Odd as much as Odd Thomas, though I liked Brother Odd, okay. Odd Hours was also pretty tedious.

Hmmm...a fellow Dean Koontz reader. Have you read Lightning? It was his first book I read and though it was awesome. However after that I've only found two other books that I enjoyed as well. Midnight and Watchers. Also I listened to Tick Tock on CD which was pretty good too.

Yes, I have read Lighting. Gread book.

I love Koontz, though I feel a lot of his more recent books aren't as good as the stuff he was writing 10-15 years ago, like Soul Survivor, Intensity, False Memory, or Life Expectency. Although, about two years ago his dog died and I think the grief of that may have put him in a rutt (any Koontz fan knows how much he loves dogs). At the time, he was writing The Darkest Evening of the Year. I won't spoil it too much just in case you want to read it, but it's another book about a smart dog and I think a lot of people were expecting it to be like Watchers. But, the book got to be very tedious and convoluted, and the ending felt rushed. Supposedly, Koontz couldn't write for like a whole month after his dog died, and had only a few months left before he had to meet the deadline for the book.

Watchers was the first book of his that I read, and it is still my favorite. The movie fucking sucked, though.

holy shit, I am on Odd Hours right now, so I will hold off judgement. But your thoughts on the first three are right on par with mine. I liked the first, borderline hated Forever Odd, and REALLY liked Brother Odd.

Have you read the first two books of his Frankenstein Trilogy?

Believe it or not, I still haven't gotten around to those. I saw the TV show, which was okay. I'll probably read those, this summer. I think he's got another book coming out in a few days-- Relentless.

"The Dream of Eagles" series by Jack White. This may be a personal thing, though. I fell in love with The Skystone because of the Roman theme. Once Merlin took over narration, I stopped caring.

I also found that the "Incarnations of Immortality" series by Piers Anthony tanked right after the first book. On A Pale Horse was so great, and I read every book in the series, waiting for one that would even be half as good.

Kind of a technicality, but the epilogue of Harry Potter 7 just sucked the big one

It completely ruins the dark tone of the previous few books with a completely redundant, contrived, and anticlimatic epilogue that might as well have read "And they all lived happily ever after."
