If it's crap... We'll tell you

This is a discussion to warn each other of Blu-Rays that simply do NOT look like they're in HD at all. Either the transfer is bad, the movie's over all visual fidelity was too low to make it look good, or the film was made on video... If you know of a film, post it here and try to keep the list growing.

My two biggest annoyances are the first release of The Fifth Element which looks worse than my DVD simply because it was a sloppy, lazy transfer full of artifacting and grain.

The second I just discovered this morning when coming back from Best Buy and that's 28 Days Later. This is one of my favorite movies and it looks GREAT on DVD. But here it looks fuzzy, out of focus, grainy, and blurry. It's nearly unwatchable. There are some films that pull so much detail out of the image that it's almost disgusting (like Crank and Crank 2), but this movie's lack of detail makes it hard to watch. It's like there's Vaseline on the lens and everything is just slightly out of focus. I'm sooo annoyed. Does anyone know if it was filmed on video?

can you explain your reasoning... because my copy looks great.

Maybe it was just my copy, because it looked really bad, maybe I'm just the unlucky one.

do you have your video settings calibrated? It's not a gorgeous movie to start with, but the clarity and sharpness of it doesn't suffer at all.

The Fifth Element.

From what I hear, it's a direct 720p transfer (equal to that of DVD). Which is really sad considering it's a gorgeous movie.

That's what I've heard too. That the Blu-Ray of 5th Element is nothing more than just a direct copy of the DVD copy. However, there is supposed to be a "Blu-Ray Special Edition" that is suppose to be better, but I haven't seen that one on the shelves yet.

I have both versions. The first version that came out has amazing sound. It's a lossless DTS audio track that is gorgeous, but the video is WAY subpar. The most recent release is a MUST OWN.

28 Days Later was indeed filmed on video, the Canon XL1. I've only ever seen it in standard definition, but I understand that the 35mm transfer looks quite different. I've never seen it, but based on the DV films I have seen in theaters, I would expect that to be the case. (Inland Empire looked incredible on the big screen but completely bland on DVD.)

I wonder if they made the HD dub directly from the digital files or used a print of the film.

I'd imagine it's from the print because the text is bright and crisp, but the actual filmed characters look terrible.

That doesn't mean anything. The text was created digitally, so you can render the image from the original data at any resolution without ever losing sharpness.

If that's the case, then I'm pretty sure that they converted it (more or less) directly from their editing software.

Either way the movie is shite on blu-ray and should not be sold.

One thing I'm not looking forward to on Blu-Ray is Justice League season 2 because of it's letterbox transfer. I'd almost prefer it 4:3 like season 1.
