My biggest surprise was The dark knight (i didnt think it would be good) and my biggest disappointment was quantum of solace (after casino royale i was so thrilled about james bond but it didnt work out)

Nothing really disappointed me, but I thought Tropic Thunder could have been funnier. To be honest, Robert Downey, Jr. (and surprisingly Tom Cruise) saved this movie from being just run of the mill.
The biggest surprise to me was Cloverfield. Look, I knew The Dark Knight and Iron Man would be top notch, but Cloverfield seemed like a hit or miss that turned out to be a hit.
I agree with you on Tropic Thunder. Then again, I've only seen it once. I didn't think Zoolander was very funny the first time I saw it, either, but now it's one of my favorite comedies . . .
Otherwise, biggest surprise: The Dark Knight and Iron Man (I always make sure I completely deplete my hope-valves before going to see a comic book movie)
Biggest Disappointment: Hellboy II ( I love del Toro, but this was just mundane and all over the place with cliches)
Biggest suprice: JCVD. Who would have tought Van Damme would ever come back to theaters.
Biggest disappointment: The Dark Knight. Two-Face was as wasted in ths one as Venom was in Spider-man 3. And then they kill him off.
Biggest Disappointment: Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull - This is the one I had the most emotional investment in. I traced the development for years. (Way back to 2003!) I had been hoping, praying, that I could feel the same feeling like I had when I first watched Raiders when I was in the single digit ages. But, alas, no. Sure, it was a nostalgia trip and that was worth the price of admission, but it kind of depressed me that we had to resort to the Star Wars route. Too much CG, the villains didn't have menace, and the massive plot holes and production mistakes made me cringe. (The part where Indy is standing on a rock, watching a mushroom cloud from a nuclear explosion looked like it was done on someone's laptop.) Not to mention, the part where Indy is inside the storehouse where the background was obviously a matte painting.
Gone are the days of old, sadly. You just can't use CG to fill in the actual stunt.
My biggest surprise happened in one particular shot during the pool scene in Let The Right One In, but somehow I don't think that's what you meant.
The films that most exceeded my expectations were probably Iron Man and Hellboy II (both of which I consider far better films than The Dark Knight), although Tropic Thunder, Kung Fu Panda, and The Midnight Meat Train also deserve mention. I was expecting greatness from WALL*E, but that movie shook me to the core like no animated film since Pinocchio. I was certainly not expecting that.
The biggest disappointment was probably Doomsday. Some awesome car chases and hilariously over-the-top sequences couldn't compensate for the 20 minutes of voiceover at the start of the film. Considering how much I liked Marshall's previous work (The Descent is probably in my top 3 horror films of all time), I would definately say this was the year's biggest disappointment.
