If it's crap... We'll tell you

For me, it was Martin Scorsese not winning Best Director for Raging Bull. In my opinion, Raging Bull is the best directed movie ever. The score fits the scenes perfectly, camera moves are flawless, and the boxing sequences are perfectly choreographed. He really made the camera a third boxer, really adding to the authenticity of the fights. Also, he perfectly builds up La Motta's paranoia throughout the movie, of course, a lot of the credit to that would go to a flawless performance by De Niro, who truly deserved his Oscar. Martin Scorsese was at death's door when he decided to make this movie, suffering from cocaine addiction. He poured his soul into this movie, truly believing it would be his last. Its truly a shame he didn't win.

This forum may have been covered already, but to you Spillians, what's the biggest crime in Oscar history?

as i mentioned on my reply to MDS' comment; Al Pacino getting snubbed THROUGHOUT the 70s & 80s is a crime.

In my opinion
Gladitor winning over Traffic.
Driving Miss Daisy winning over My Left Foot

My Fair Lady over Dr. Strangelove

How's this one for a BIG crime?

Goodfellas had Best Actor (Supporting) winner, Best Supporting Female Actor, Best Director, Best Picture nominations, and multiple Critic awards, and BAFTA nominated Best Lead Male....

Yet, Ray Liotta didn't get a SINGLE nomination for the Oscars, AND never won a Critic Award for his role as Henry Hill.

Odd, but it's sort of strange that all the awards that Goodfellas got from Director to cast, Ray Liotta who is on screen THE MOST in the movie, and who the movie is ABOUT, and who has to hold his own against all those OTHER talents.... never got a single award for Goodfellas, nor even got NOMINATED for an award for Goodfellas.

It's one of the best performances of Liotta's Career and he gets completely snubbed. That pisses me off so bad.

Yep, completely snubbed. And I don't even mean just an Oscar snub, but snubbed by EVERYONE.

No critic award nominations, no "popular choice" type of awards, no recognition at ALL for his job on that movie. I mean, I understand that others got nominated for an Oscar or BAFTA, or some other award. But Ray Liotta himself didn't get a DAMN thing from ANYONE.

Citizen Kane has to be the biggest. How Green Was My Valley was just another Ford movie but Kane...
Also Treasure of Sierra Madre,John Huston's best movie losing to Hamlet in 1948.Taxi Driver deserved to win over Rocky.
And of course Pulp Fiction over Forrest Gump

Kane lost because of outside influences. No one wanted to upset Hearst. Also, it's hard to believe, but it was a FLOP in the theaters during the original release. It didn't earn respect until it's re-release almost a decade later when it took off.

Fuck How Green was my Valley!!!!!

Totally agree about Taxi Driver. I guess that at the time, the Academy didn't want to go with a film so dark, so they went with the uplifting Rambo.

I remember my mom being upset when Gary Sinise didn't win for best supporting actor in Forrest Gump and it instead went to Marin Landau in Ed Wood. She kept saying he only got it because he's old and is going to die soon. Funny, that was back in 94 and he's still alive today. I think they both did an awesome acting job, but feel that Landau did indeed deserve it

Dances With Wolves winning Best Picture, when Goodfellas was a clear favorite. Sure other films that year were worthy contenders, but to this day, I think Goodfellas was screwed out of a great opportunity. And let's face it: who here really can compare one movie who has a great casting, great direction, and source for screenplay, to one that no one hardly remembers now? No one can really say Dances With Wolves was hands down the winner when Goodfellas had more going for it and has held up so well to this day. I submit to you, Goodfellas not getting the respect it deserves.
