If it's crap... We'll tell you

For me, it was Martin Scorsese not winning Best Director for Raging Bull. In my opinion, Raging Bull is the best directed movie ever. The score fits the scenes perfectly, camera moves are flawless, and the boxing sequences are perfectly choreographed. He really made the camera a third boxer, really adding to the authenticity of the fights. Also, he perfectly builds up La Motta's paranoia throughout the movie, of course, a lot of the credit to that would go to a flawless performance by De Niro, who truly deserved his Oscar. Martin Scorsese was at death's door when he decided to make this movie, suffering from cocaine addiction. He poured his soul into this movie, truly believing it would be his last. Its truly a shame he didn't win.

This forum may have been covered already, but to you Spillians, what's the biggest crime in Oscar history?

I couldn't disagree more, that film had so many flaws.

Personally.. it was just last year's Academy Awards where The Dark Knight wasn't even nominated, and I felt that it was a better movie than Slumdog Millionaire in more ways than one. Better writing, acting and overall mood(s) captured by Ledger's chilling portrayal of a brilliantly insane, comic mastermind, Joker and hands down on of the best sequels that I have ever been privileged to watch.

On a minor note, why do people tend to ask me if I hate Indian culture if I say that I disliked Slumdog? And since when did the movie become indicative of Indian culture(s) when it was directed by an English director and overused themes of fate and/or destiny throughout?

I understand their need to preserve the sanctity of the nomination process.. I just felt that the best movie didn't win last year.. Hell, it wasn't even nominated. However, good thread in your post, MDS.

Hmm this a tough one but I'll go with my gut on this:
TITANIC WINNING BEST PICTURE (and an assload of other Oscars)

Personally, what irks me the most about this is the fact that, of all the Best Picture nominees that year, it was the least critically acclaimed (I compared the percentages on Rotten Tomatoes, so take this info how you please). Now does that make much sense to you? It doesn't to me! I found the other four nominees to be far superior all around. L.A. Confidential, in my opinion, should have won Best Picture.

I could also go on about how animated films are treated like shit by the Academy. How many times has a Pixar movie been one of (if not the) most critically acclaimed film of the year? I sure hope this new 10 nominee thing helps to give animation more representation on awards night.

Oh yeah, and I totally agree with Raging Bull not winning Best Director (or Best Picture for that matter), its one of my favorite films.

Why? Personally, it seemed like just a popularity contest since the movie was going on to be the highest grossing movie and everyone was talking about it. Its just like 1994, where Forrest Gump beat both Pulp Fiction and The Shawshank Redemption for Best Picture.

Why wasn't Linda Hamilton even looked at for a nomination for T2?

No, I'm serious; go back and watch her.

Yeah, She was good in T2 but its an action movie and thus cannot be taken seriously be the Academy, I guess. Shame.
