I just saw the wonderful 1988 film "The Vanishing", and wow. What an ending. That blows Se7en and The Mist way out of the water.

Any movie endings that surprised you, or had you appalled at what you just saw?

Here are my favorites:

-------

The Vanishing (this takes my place as the most dark and surprising)

Don't Look Now

Oldboy

Dr. Strangelove

Bay of Blood

American History X for sure.....then there's Pan's Labyrinth that has a pretty dark ending, the whole entire movie has a melancholy overdraft.

I forgot about American History X...that is a fantastic example of a black as night movie with a shocking ending that goes where you'd never expect it to....Pan's Labyrinth is such vague ending to- incredible.

lol, gotta go for the rips.

  1. Scarface
  2. Does fight club count?
  3. The Wrestler

Black Swan

The Mist.

The Dark Knight and Schindler's List

Those two movies don't seem to have dark endings to me.

You kiddin? I came (leaves little space between thumb and index finger) THIS close to shedding a tear at the end of both of those movies.

Spoiler?

Yes, TDK is so dark it implied that the people on the boat wouldn't kill themselves in real life.
