If it's crap... We'll tell you

Aight.
As of Final Crisis's conclusion Bruce Wayne has been taken off the board and thrown onto another earth/time/whatever.
Gotham is without a Batman to protect it, people are calling for Commissioner Gordan to step down, and all hell is going to break loose we're told.
Battle for the Cowl is the 3 issue miniseries written and drawn by Tony Daniel that is supposed to pit several characters from the Batverse in some crazy action to see if and who should replace Batman.

There's a handful of oneshot tie-ins and some 3 issue minis that will run along side it such as, Oracle: The Cure, and a new Azrael mini.

After the mini concludes there will be 8 Batman family titles.
Batman: Winnick, Daniel
Detective Comics (starring Batwoman): Rucka, Williams III
Red Robin: Chris Yost
Outsiders: Tomasi, Garbett
Gotham City Sirens: Paul Dini
Streets of Gotham: Paul Dini, Nguyen
Batman and Robin: Morrison, Quietly
Batgirl: maybe Kevin VanHook

Now Bruce Wayne will be back as Batman eventually but in the meantime DC is saying that there will be a new Batman determined by the end of Battle for the Cowl who then start appearing in the monthlies.
DC is telegraphing that Barbara Gordon will be Batgirl again as the current Batgirl (Cassandra Cain) will have a new identity in Streets of Gotham.
Though Manhunter was canceled again due to low sales she will be the new District Attorney in Gotham.

So post your thoughts on the Batbooks and their current direction.

Haven't really been keeping up on this whole mess. But I did pick up the first part of "Whatever happened to The Caped Crusader?". I came across an advertisement with Two-face dressed in warped Batman costume.

Yeah. I'm kinda hoping that doesn't happen in the actual comic, but I like the red and white suit, it looks like hes dressing himself up one way or another.

Oh no...Judd Winick is back on Batman?

Can't say I'm a fan of his either. It makes me think Jason Todd will be Batman... I kinda dig Winnicks Jason Todd.

My guess is that this is all going to play out like the Captain America death. Like when The Punisher wore the Captain America suit, someone unfit to wear the mask (like Jason Todd or Two-Face) and will begin to abuse their power over Gotham. Then Dick Greyson will show up, a fight breaks out, and he will become the new Batman.

BftC looks to also bring back Black Mask who blows up Arkham.

Though I am not a fan of Winnicks I will still be getting Rucka, Tomasi, and Morrisons books, and checking out both of Dinis. Either way there's a lot of variety so hopefully fans can find at least one book they like.
I think Morrison will still be writing stories around Bruce Wayne so I wonder how it will turn out for DC having a bunch of titles about Bruce being dead. Or maybe that's not how it will go and Morrison is going to play in the same sandbox as everybody here.

It's true Winick does a very good Jason Todd and Black Mask. That much will be good.

I sort of love the combined Battle For The Cowl covers, I think they're a great splash of the Bat-cast/Bat-family.

Honestly, I think that in theory, RIP was fantastic. The actual "death" of Batman in FC...ehh, whatever.

If done right, Battle For The Cowl could be really great. The Bat-family's a fantastic cast to work with and having his friends and "sons" literally grappling not only with who will replace him but SHOULD he be replaced is an awesome idea.

I know it's like with the death of Captain America where everyone and their mother bitched and complained and moaned about how nothing worse could ever happen in the universe EVER, people are going to complain. But the new Cap is fantastic, hands down. So I'm holding my definite opinion until I've actually seen and read some of Battle For The Cowl and how it all turns out.

I agree the Bat-family is one of the most interesting cast of characters in comics today. Mainly, i think, because they are a group of lesser (non-large title) characters that all started out of the same pubilication. It's better, i feel, than the company putting larger publication characters together (JLA).

with the larger names characters have to fight for the story spotlight... and fans are far far far more oppinionated

Hands down the only one that should and could replace batman and do a good job of upholding the batman mantle... is dick grayson.

some of the new issues of the big titles have me worried for the ligitimacy of the comic industry...

DC lately has been trying to do things that marvel does and vise versa...

I love batman, it's my favorite comic, but i don't know about all this. I wish DC would stop throwing people into and out of other worlds and all this time paradox bullshit. all it does is cause them to, three years down the line, go "Opps..... yea...that didnt happen... redo?"

i'm sick of continuity resets, and DC is king of ignoring continuity

I don't know if I should read Greg Rucka's run on Detective Comics. I read one of Rucka's stories, and it sucked, made no fucking sense. He also wrote the screenplay for the "Crossfire" segment in the direct-to-DVD anime Batman: Gotham Knight, and his story wasn't that great. The other titles sound interesting, but I hope its Barbara Gordon that returns as Batgirl, and not Cassandra Cain.

With eight Batman comics each month, I don’t know, I’m on a tight budget. I hope these writers don’t do a cross over with there titles, I’m not a huge fan, if they do, I’ll go trade paperback. I’ll just have to see what story lines will be presented in these eight titles.

If you don't like Rucka you fail at comics and life.

Plain and simple. Sorry.
