If it's crap... We'll tell you

Avatar comes out in 12/18/09 looks good or not? Pros its in 3d that will kick ass. It has a good story behide it. Its look beauitful and great to look at. Cons theirs a little pot hole and that damn tv spot is makeing it look like A kid movie which isnt. I also hope it wont be another transformers 2 but this director knows his shit so im not that worried.

so its beautiful and great to look at but looks like a cartoon?

I ment some of the action scenes look to kuch like a cartoon because it half live action and half cg and some parts likes to much animated

I think it's going to be a big flop. Both critically and financially. The bizarre creature designs and the disappointing CGI won't pull in the regular movie watchers. And I think District 9 has already stolen some of it's thunder as well.

I'm not sure I agree with District 9 stealing its thunder. There's going to be four months between District 9's release and the Avatar premier to let the dust settle. Outside of a few genre tropes, they're probably not going to be all that similar.

Even if they were very much alike, I think we sometimes underestimate how forgiving audiences can be. Cast your mind back to '98. Toward the end of the year we got Antz. Then about a month later A Bug's Life hit theatres. Despite the similarities, which were more than superficial, they were both successful.

I would more like chalk that up to "lack of options."

That's all kids had to watch back then... So of course they'd both fare decently.

What's Avatar's direct (genre) competition? Anyone know because our release dates are different.

I don't know. It's pretty similar. A human experiences another alien culture and in turn decides to aid them. I wouldn't say these are the exact same films, but I'm sure they have enough in common for people to draw comparisons.

Avatar and District 9 feel like an art assignment given to two very different painters. District 9 is dark and gritty while Avatar looks glossy and expensive.

I'm not a betting man but I can't see Avatar being as big as Cameron expects.

Avatar to me is probably going to be a big hit finicially because of all the advertising it's getting but then again huge advertising didn't work for Speed Racer but Speed Racer wasn't in 3D. Avatar could flop due to it being too CGI heavy and it not featuring those typical Hollywood cliches but then I again Watchmen, District 9 & Where the Wild Things Are both did well at the box office.

Also what is Avatar up against in December?

Only Speed Racer didn't have HALF the hype that Avatar had. Speed Racer was advertised like any other movie that might be good, Avatar is being advertised like it's going to descend from Heaven on a golden chariot and lead us to the promised land.

The thing thats going to make or break this movie finanically is going to be the word of mouth. At this point, I just don't feel that it's going to carry through; expecially with the 3 big films opening for boxing day weekend (Imaginarium of Dr Parnassus, Alvin 2 and Sherlock Holmes).

@Mr. Tumnus, do you really that Heath Ledger movie and Sherlock Holmes are going to beat Avatar in theaters? Sherlock Holmes is a classic character so most likely people will reject it like Astro Boy and Speed Racer and nobody is going to see some extremely weird film just because of Heath is in it. The only thing Avatar has to worry about is Alvin and the Chicmunks 2 because it's a family movie and the first film was a success.

That doesn't make any sense.

If anything, Sherlock Holmes being a classic character will make MORE people see it. Not to mention neither of those characters are what I would consider classic. Astro Boy is probably only a classic character in Japan, I doubt many people would know who he is in the US, but Speed is far from a classic. If you walk up to a random person on the street, chances are they well not know who Astro Boy or Speed Racer is. However, EVERYONE will know who Sherlock Holmes is.

And don't forget that the Imagniarium of Doctor Parnassus not only has Heath Ledger, but Johnny Depp, Collin Farrel and Jude Law. It's got more Star Power than Mario on a lucky block streak. Why wouldn't it make money?
