Bryan Hitch, dude, you do great costumed heroes and you made the Hulk look like an utter bad ass... but I mean... well go to a picture for reference

Don't see what I'm talking about? Lets try this helpful reference sheet.

That, right there. What the fuck is that? This is supposed to be a dramatic scene in Ultimates. However, I can't get over Tony's face. I'd be willing to let it slide, but this isn't the only time I've seen similar... "derp faces", for lack of a better descriptive word. Maybe I'm being picky... but it just bothers me.

Anyway, he's my gripe. Who's your's?

One of the biggest problems many comic book artists face is Same Face Syndrome. take the top ten artist in comics now, have them draw five male faces in black and white WITHOUT a mask or hair and examine the results.

Jim Lee, for all his accolades, is notorious for this. hells, NONE of his characters look different.

In most cases, they ALL look the same. Normally, an artist would be called upon to create a unique look for someone they are drawing, but with production deadlines and the need to create multiple images in a short period of time, its much easier for them to just make a 'look' and stick with it.

This is lazy art...and when you get lazy, you forget the basics. When you forget the basics, it shows when you try to do something a bit more than just Stern Look #428 (like Thor there).

I don't have a gripe with one particular artist but, as I got older, I realized that there is a 'standardized' look to comic book artwork. I don't like that. I learned to draw mostly from cartoons and comics, and I'm grateful for the foundation they provided, but with mainstream comic artwork there's this sense of weightlessness (that's not quite the right word I'm looking for but it's the only one that comes to mind at the moment); it all feels very, well, flat.

I gravitate towards are very rough looking, highly stylized, and often-used-for-one-off-stories artwork.

I picked on Lee because he's consistantly rated one of the best artists in the field...and yet cannot seem to make two faces with different structure. I see better attempts in The Walking Dead and smaller books.

Greg Land, he does the same shit Jim lee does but what pisses me about him the most is that he cannot draw a woman's hip for shit. Every female body he draws has the lower body of a 12yrd asian girl,

Can he at least draw eyes? Lee seems to take a page from Liefeld in that area.

Gotta go with Land. Very lazy and borders on gross.

I want to say Rob Liefeld, but that guy is just so enthusiastic about comics. Even if he does make some pretty bad ones.

I'm not sure Enthusiasm is an excuse for bad art... but rock on.

I recently heard an interesting thing about Rob on the LEOG. Apparently one of the main reasons he continues to work is that he is a REALLY nice guy. I mean really REALLY nice. He's friendly, approachable, has a good sense of humor, listens to complaints, gives gifts and parties. hells, I met him once at a con...and even though I tore him a new one on his style, he took it in stride and even made jokes on himself. the bit where he complained that he needed help scratching his ear because his shoulders where in the way actaully cracked me up. I walked away liking the man if not the art.

Well at least Jim can draw a woman to look like a goddamn woman. Land draws Jubilee and the chick ends up looking like Gackt.

I just thougt an artist more horrible than Liefield and Land put together. And that's Frank Quitely. How the hell does that talentless hack gets work? This is what I'm talking about.

This is suppose to be Emma Frost? WTF!

Its bad enough Grant Morrison wrote this fucked up storyline but the shitty artwork was just too much,

This is not being lazy, this is just ......every time I see something of Quitely I always have this reaction

You can go now.

In some ways his style is a bit more natural. Look at the way clothes fit and lay on the body. However...yeah I really don't like his style or look. Emma looks odd and puffy in that pic, never mind the TERRIBLE costume.

And it sucks his was involved the the Greyson Batman run...I really liked the idea of Dick finally becoming Bats...and doing it well.

Maybe they do it to boost sales. Be it because they find themselves attractive and/or their label does...or because people might not know who you are but they'll recognize your face? Or maybe it is lack of creativity.
