If it's crap ... We'll tell you

Aaron posted a statusOne of the things I notice is that most of the hard rock and heavy metal bands of today fall into forms that decrease the quality of their music, like post-grunge and metalcore. Does anyone in Spill know of any bands and artists that actually rock and are not any of the overdone genres mentioned. It doesn't matter if the band is old or has broken up.
To have a clue for suggestions, two of my favorite bands are Aerosmith and Pantera. They are good start points for finding the good stuff and avoiding the bad. Van Halen, Metallica, Guns 'N Roses, and Judas Priest are also acceptable spring boards into discussion.
The goal is to find artists that are great and truly rock hard and discuss about them. I will be active in giving feedback in choices.
Last but not least, no incredibly sissy rock!!!

Alternative rock and post-punk are both forms of rock that come from punk (which is hard rock without the bravado and more of a shock lean), yet they are experimentive. That does not make them sissy at all, as there are certaim bands in both genres that have a harder lean (especially in alt. rock) than most.
Also, here is a correction, sissy rock really means soft rock.

Permalink Reply by Jason Straub on April 25, 2011 at 7:13pm I don't want to start a flame war or anything, but I'm not a huge fan of this band, and every time I hear them brought up I see this video:

Permalink Reply by The Leo of Costa Rica on April 9, 2011 at 11:27pm Some years ago while traversing the Himalayas, I came across a withered old man lying on the side of a snowy, narrow road. He told me how he had become lost on the way to his temple and asked me for some supplies. Willing to help my fellow man, I gave him some food and an extra bottle of water I kept inside my backpack and, after thanking me for my generosity, the old man told me what he considered to be the wisest thing he had learned from all his years of traveling and arduous study:
"If something isn't awesome, just throw some Soundgarden at it until it becomes awesome."
The old man then disappeared before my very eyes.
I live by those words, and considering this discussion isn't awesome yet, I think it's time to put them into practice.

I am a huge fan of classic rock myself but I like to treasure hunt for new bands too. Here are a few I think are worth mentioning.
Children 18:3 - really small punk band that can do fast paced stuff great.
Maylene and the Sons of Disaster- Great southern rock that is a bit harder than the classic southern rock guys
Norma Jean- Older stuff is way too metalcore for me but their last release is fantastic and very diverse
Two that are more risky and might be considered sissy but know how to write great music and lyrics are Mewithoutyou and As Cities Burn.
Here are the songs I recommend to listen to from each. Good luck on the never ending quest of finding great music

That Children 18:3 song is some great punk music, and the chick in the video looks fine.
Maylene & the Sons of Disaster is one great southern metal band, good choice.
Norma Jean, really? Is this from their latest release?
MeWithoutYou is more punk than sissy in my opinion, though I could tell how you considered them risky.
As Cities Burn (see MeWithoutYou).
Permalink Reply by CoHostlovesmysugarlumps on April 18, 2011 at 5:35pm Yeah Children 18:3 has a great thing going. I love Maylene. Yeah that is from the new Norma Jean. I think there last record is so much better then their last records. ITs more experimental but it is good. MewithoutYou and As cities burn have sissy songs but Gdi they write great lyrics. As Cities Burns song Timothy, about suicide, is so good. Sounds a lot like Radiohead though.
Anyways glad I could help. Music is one of those rare things in this world that can cross any boundary and reach people.
