Despite the economic downturn, crime in the USA continues to fall which is a surprise to many social scientists. No one is absolutely sure why this is, but here are the leading theories:

Smarter police tactics

Police tactics continue to improve, in particular quantitative methods and 'broken windows' policing.

The increased availability of legal abortions from the 70s onwards

Fewer children born to teenage, unwed and poor mothers.

Decreased lead exposure

Exposure in childhood is linked to aggression and criminal behaviour in adults. It was phased out of gasoline in the 1970s.

Video games and the Internet

Affordable items of entertainment that keep people inside and away from real crime and drugs.

... Thoughts?

LOL
I'm always afraid that I'll get kicked out of my Thai club if I do something like that.
Maybe the people who record the crime rates are just doing a shittier job?
You distrust the FBI. Understandable, but what would be their motive?

Motive? maybe there is no motive it could be just plain old fashioned incompetence. I guess it is just easier for me to believe that some one made a mistake rather than the crime rate lowering in a recession.

Some other possible solutions maybe we are providing more well fare in the problem areas? I'm not sure I was just surprised to hear this. It is welcomed news though.

I'm a great believer in 'plain old fashioned incompetence.' Don't think it's the case here though.

It is indeed great news, and thus mostly unreported.

I guess its no different from the government saying the economy is getting better when in fact it isnt. Maybe its to stop people from panicking about the economy, job loss etc.

Yeah, crime rates have been steadily falling from the 60's onward; they've fallen roughly 20 percent since then on the national scale. The average number of violent crimes reported on by the media? Increased by 600%. According to Micheal Moore, anyway.

A big part of it is due to desegregation and increases in social welfare programs. Anti-drug messages are now aimed at kids through several entertainment mediums, and youth programs offer at-risk kids a way to make friends without the risk of falling into gang activity, minor or major.

I doubt that police tactics are a major factor, as the police are great at aggravating situations and have been militarizing themselves over the last couple of decades to a point that is unacceptable. Planned Parenthood and services like it have helped somewhat, and regulations on harmful chemicals such as lead has led to lower incidents of chemical poisoning in children, which is nice. Video games/the Internet can be used in order to take up a person's time, but it might be difficult to classify them as flat-out "beneficial".

I just figured that it's because all the "bad-seeds" from the 60's and 70's are getting too old and the "bad-seeds" from the 80's and 90's have killed each other off.

Either that, or you have to take into account how many states have a "Three Strike" policy, so now your repeat offenders are getting put into prison for longer terms.

I think is because less minor crimes like bar fights are reported.. When people stop reporting bullshit stuff then it seems like crime is going down..It's not people, truse me

Perhaps some extrapolation is in order. Between 2008 and 2009 violent crime fell by 5.3% and property crime by 4.6%. Between 2009 and 2010 they fell by 5.5% and 2.8% respectively.

This has happened in States with and without 'Three strikes', which in unsurprising since most people incarcerated due to the policy are only guilty of misdemeanors, such as minor drug offences.

"The "bad-seeds" from the 80's and 90's have killed each other off?" ..... LOL

I blame video games.
