If it's crap... We'll tell you

So, I just read "The Killing Joke." I don't think I like it as much as everyone else but it was still pretty awesome. I've also read Watchmen and two volumes of Tom Strong and, well, he seems incapable of making anything bad. So~ go ahead and talk about the man and his work here wily-nilly.

Also, is the backstory in "The Killing Joke" canon now? In HUSH Pushback we get the photo album and The Riddler bribing him with the identity of his wife's killer and all...has that been retconned yet?

I fucking hated The Killing Joke, but then again I hate The Joker too. So, meh.

As far as I know, the Killing Joke backstory was more of a 'one-off' than anything Cannon. While I could be 100% wrong, I don't think that they ever really went anywhere with the backstory of The Killing Joke, and instead went with the 'Main' story and worked on that one.

Hurm, that post under there should've been a replay.

Well, it is at least a "little" canon, what with Barbara being crippled and all.

I don't know if this thread is the appropriate one to pimp this but if you get a chance collect Alan Moore/Alan Davis team up on Captain Britain, which is kind of been the inspiration behind the current Captain Britain and MI13. Check it out if you get a chance. It's about as mainstream as Moore will get.

If you can find it, Promethea is really interesting. I got if from the library one time. I'm a fan of Top 10 as well.

Surprisingly, he had an interesting run on Wildcats of all things and even did something on Youngblood. I know, fucking YOUNGBLOOD!

Well the man is insane.

See I honestly never thought that. If anything he's more canny than people think. Moore just has very clear ideas about how he wants to work, who he wants to work with, and what he wants to work on. And the fact that he didn't and still doesn't jump at what are seen as "surefire" opportunities, like adaptations of his work, confuses people.

When people make an assumption like "oh he's that crazy guy", it's sort of demeaning to the general concept of wanting to work and create art for the sake of art, which what Moore's standing up for. He's not crazy, he's a bit of a weirdo but he's an artist first and foremost.

Thank you. People don't praise Top 10 enough. It's a really fun read.

I hear the non-Moore second volume is good too, though I haven't had a chance to catch up on it.

Neither have I. I'm waiting till it comes out in a trade. I know the artist, Gene Ha, is still on board.

What's great about the Killing Joke was that it set up many of the character elements of Batman's psychology that following writers would later expand upon (like Morrison's Arkham Asylum). It really sets up the idea that Batman is just as crazy as the villains that he faces. The comic doesn't even end with a huge fist fight like most comic book's do, instead it ends with a simple joke told by the Joker. What makes this joke brilliant is the fact that it completely explains the bizarre connection that the Joker and Batman share.

Plus, Brian Brolland's iconic drawings will always be the first thing I think of when someone says The Joker. Sorry, Heath Ledger. You captured the Joker's character perfectly but I wasn't happy with the visual design The Dark Knight makeup artists selected.

How do you guys feel about the color change done in the new hardcover edition of the comic? I personally preferred John Higgins wild original color choice.
