If it's crap... We'll tell you

So I recently finished V for Vendetta, and before then I read Watchmen and The Killing Joke.

What are some other titles from Alan Moore you can recommend I check out? Which ones do I avoid?

Thanks.

"The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen"
"Top Ten"
"Swamp Thing"
are probably my other three faves by him.

Check out Top 10. I love love LOVE his run on this comic and I personally rate it second to watchmen. There's more but I'll let someone else take the stage :P

If you haven't read his Superman stories they're really good. For the Man Who Has Everything and Whatever Happened To the Man of Tomorrow? are classics.

Completely agree. Love both those stories.

Top Ten
Promethea

Top Ten is way better than The Killing Joke.

I don't think you can really make that case, especially since The Killing Joke is a very short story and Top Ten is much larger. Plus, as much as I enjoy Top Ten, it never had an emotional effect on me the way KJ did.

I prefer it for just being blatantly more fun and not so fucking hung up on being SERIOUS BUSINESS. Because Batman is apparently SERIOUS BUSINESS. Written exactly like that.

Well, it is one of the major turning points in the entire history of the title. I guess there's nothing wrong with not liking more serious comics for yourself, but that's hardly a criticism of the book, which is WIDELY regarded as brilliant. Including by myself. So pfffftttthhhhppppp!

Alan Moore doesn't regard it very highly. Considering the phoned in ending, that it was too short for him to make any good statements about the human condition, and the overbearing darkness of the whole thing. I still think its a good Joker story and the Brian Bolland art is awesome.

I like serious comics...I just don't like TKJ very much. I will grant it its place as a key moment in the Batman mythos, albeit a controversial one.

Same. I thought The Killing Joke was good, but probably at the time it was so shocking to see Joker do what he did in that book, that it has the hold over it does. But I wouldn't go so far to say it's Moore's greatest work, either. From all accounts, books like From Hell, League of Extraordinary Gentleman, and as most of you have said, Top Ten, are his hallmark.

I think Top Ten is next in line.

It's funny. When people talk about The Killing Joke all they ever mention is the shooting of Barbra Gordan. What makes the comic great (to me anyway) is Joker's supposed origin. It really makes you view the Joker as a sympathetic villain. The Killing Joke isn't what The Clown Prince of Crime does to Gordan, the real killing joke is the pain of existence.

Screw the petitions! In order to save Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull from "suffering" at the hands of Postal, we must band together to kill the SON OFA BITCH director named Uwe Boll, forget doing anything else. Who's with me?
