If it's crap... We'll tell you

Im a big scary movie buff...

unfortunately these days that means being suckered into watching the next "edge of your seat" thriller just to end up stuck with paying to watch "the hills have eyes", highwaymen", "turistas", "the village", and all other sorts of unmitigated crap.

Then when they do seem to get it right, "the ring", "saw", they have to go and mess it up with crappy sequels.

I guess my question is why is it so hard these days for horror movies to get it right? is it that we have been desensitized and are no longer so easy to impress? is it that directors are lazy and ever more dependant on cgi? what is your take on it? and while your at it, what are your recomendations on good recent scary movies? i dont know, year 2000+

I really enjoyed Signs, House of Wax and 1408. And horror movies suck because nobody can really top the classics like Halloween and The Shining. So they decide to rip-off the entire film because there's no different way of doing it.

Man I hear you, I'm a huge hooror movie buff myself and often wonder the same thing. I think their all just out to make a quick buck either with sequels, knock-offs or remakes. Ever once in a while they do it right like the remake of the Amityville horror or Clover field (if you consider it a horror), but to make a good horror they need to forget about trying to make money( like toning it down to be a pg13 so more people will see it), and they need to step away from CG(for the most part CG isn't scary because you can still tell it's fake).

It's hard to make a horror movie that really scares people these days. Most people aren't scared by a monster that pops out of nowhere. They aren't scared by the amount of gore that exist in the movie.

If you can, look up a film called Dead Birds. I won't say it's a great movie but it is defiantly the scariest film I have ever seen.

So what do say about films like the Blair Witch Project and The Last Broadcast?

I really like their innovative technique of trying to make their story believable by filming the movies with normal cameras.

I actualy really liked the Blair witch, I liked it's originality and how it could produce a response without showing anything. That's probably why I loved Cloverfield because it was the same concept but done right. I didn't see Last Broadcast but it's the same technique right?

Yeah, almost the same. It's basicly a mockumentary.

I'll have to look it up then.

I liked Blair Witch too, screw the haters.

I honestly think that there was never truly a period of time where ALL the horror films comming out were good. For every good one, there will always be 4 crappy ones.

Anyone remember such masterpieces as The Leperchaun?

Yup....sadly

HA! Leprechaun was one of those movies that made me laugh just by seeing how he would go to no ends to get his pot of gold. Also, it introduced me to the hotness that is Jennifer Aniston. However, not scary at all. My friends and I also got kicks out of the sequels too, especially the one where he goes to Vegas.
