If it's crap... We'll tell you

For those who think they might know what happened...

Origin (theory 1) - Adrian Veidt kidnapped a group of scientists and modern artists to design and create the creature, then unleashed it into NYC as a means to end the Cold War. (News doesn't travel very fast in Antarctica)

Origin (theory 2) - My roommate thought the monster could potentially have escaped from the capsized tanker, supporting the possibility of a man-made monstrosity.

Origin (theories 3 & on) - Most other theories are mentioned in the film. I favor outer space myself.

The bugs (theory 1) - The bug creatures were spawned by the monster much in a similar way to how the 1998 Godzilla reproduced.

The bugs (theory 2) - They were parasites living on the monster.

Marlena - Speculation about Marlena's fate depends on which theory about the bugs you take to heart. In the case of theory 1, I wondered if the infant monsters could reproduce in the same way the giant did, leaving thousands of microscopic insects in her wounds to tear her apart from the inside. Favoring theory 2, the creatures bites could've been its means of reproduction, but their small size didn't cause the monster much harm.

Tough fucking monster - The monster survives mortar, missile, bomb, and nepalm attacks throughout the film, and depending on what you think happens afterwards, possibly even a nuclear strike. This guy's either got some really thick skin or he has the power to regenerate. I favor the second one, cuz I'm pretty sure I saw a limb burn off during the nepalm scene.

Any of your own?

I still haven't seen a good answer for why the monster seems so much smaller at the end of the movie (when it meets Hud), then it does when you see it from the 'copter. Is there a good reason, like how the lens was focused on the camera or something? It just seems so jarring.

There are no buildings or anything to offer any sort of perpective. From the copter, you could say, "That bitch is huge! It's the size of that skyscraper!" But when there aren't any skyscrapers, you can't really get a great sense of its size. It also would've been leaning down to eat Hud, and we only really get a view of its face.

Yeah, I didn't think about that, but now that you mention it the monster did seem smaller. Also, how does something that big sneak up on them?

I've read that before, but it wasn't that the monster really snuck up on them. After the crash, Hud ran out from behind the wreck to get the camera, and the monster was standing right there in front of him (at least this is how I remember it).

Of course, if you have ever played World of Warcraft, you know how sneaky those Devilsaurs can be.

By and large the points made by Harm add up. However, my thoughts when seeing this thing for the first time were that this thing started out as something else, but human meddling caused some sort of either gradual mutation among generations of creatures or one radical mutation that made it tough as hell. Although speaking in terms of mutation, if the creature was very small and became that large in a short amount of time, then some sort of bad pituitary gland function would lead to its eventual death, assuming its pituitary gland functions like a human's. I'll shut up now.

Has it been considered that the splash (I didnt see it) could've fallen off the tanker which may have been related to Slusho and the so-called secret ingredient caused the mutation of an already existing deep sea crevace creature which then ascended to the surface and freakin destroyed Manhattan along with many normal sized versions of the same creature?

Just saw Cloverfield last night.

I spotted the splash in the ocean in the footage at the end and I just about jumped out of my seat. My GF didn't see it so when I told her, she said "good eye".

Looking forward to hearing more.

This is the best movie I've seen for some time :)

my theory, which is strethgened by the fact that i saw the film is that there is 3 monters
a bug-like crab thing that reproduces spawn
a kracken(the bridge scene[the arm came out of the water!])
and a dragon(electronics store[news cameras saw wings! wings man wings!])
so yea....
