SPOILERS! This is only for people who have seen it.
Now you can't get mad....
Alright...so the plotline goes:
Stark is abducted to make his new missile for some bad guys in a cave.
He makes the Iron man suit instead
The movie then goes on until at the end when we discover that his business partner is actually selling missiles to the bad guys and actually planned Stark's abduction in the first place with the plans that he would be killed...
Okay, so if the bad guys had been sold the missiles anyway, why would they keep Stark alive to build something that was basically already in the mail?
Damn u had there for a sec but i get it now! lol ok well what Obadiah Stane sold those guys were regular missiles but they wanted the new and latest one "The Jericho" the one that could take out a Fawking mountain in one shot. remember he was giving a demonstration to the army?? sure they had missiles but they weren't as powerful and threatening as Tony's newest missile. And only Tony was capable of building such a thing, after all he build a suite of armor with a box of scraps.
Obadiah wanted the terrorist to kill him. The terrorist got greedy and decided to get a free missile from stark and then kill him. I don't think that Obadiah wanted them to make Tony Stark build a missile.

your right Welvin, the 10 rings guys wanted more money, and Obadiah/iron monger said no he wasn't going to pay that much for the kill, so now they cancel the deal and had Tony Stark just build them all the weapons they wanted
10 rings want more money . Obi says no. They try to get missle out of Tony he builds suit.Keep in mind several months actually pass during the suir building montage obi sells them to the terrorist anyway. For him it's a win win.
If I had to guess, the were told to kill Stark on orders of Obediah so that Obi could take over the business interest with Stark out of the way, then they could do business with Obediah. Once they discovered the target (Stark), they demanded more money and hoped that in the meantime they would get 'free weapons' from Stark while they were waiting for the money from Obediah.

Because the missles were still prototypes and ONLY stark knew the configuration of the thrust/explosive outputs because the missles weren't in full production.

Heres a thought: Why did they kidnap tony in the first place? Like...didn't they say it was because Tony wanted to stop making missiles? And isn't the reason he stopped wanting to make missiles...A RESULT OF HIM BEING KIDNAPPED...? Is that not circular, stupid and lacking sense? That movie sucked. I wrote a blog about its various plotholes too. I don't know why it was so popular.

Actually, Tony was kidnapped because the assassination attempt failed. They were originally trying to kill him, but since he survived they decided to take advantage of him on the spot. Had he died, they would have been fine, but since they opted to take him away, they were sort of stuck with either killing him or using him before killing him. They went with the longer movie decision to use him first. (Real life 'pop pop', and it's over)
