To me I gotta say I'd do a Gundam Wing game, but along the lines of the old dreamcaste Gundam game or mech warrior. Oh and the only view point you could use would be first person.
Third gives you a better view of the immediate area, but first gives you better targeting, enemy HP, maybe weaknesses if you've encountered the enemy type before.
But then it hurts the "giant robot" aspect of it, as you don't often get to see the robot. It's an idea implemented rarely, and would have to be designed carefully to have any appeal.
Eh, first-person controls of a robot are more suited towards realistic gameplay, and Gundam battles are anything but realistic. Third person is better from a stylistic point of view, letting you more easily take in your surroundings and enjoy the destruction you cause.
