Hey fellow spill members. I recently was able to watch the movie Taken so I figured I'd give a review of it. This is my first review so if I sound like I have no idea what the hell I'm talking about well...sorry. Anyway here it is:
Oh and here's the trailer in case you haven't seen it:
Taken is about an ex-CIA agent Bryan (Liam Neeson) who is trying to make up for lost time with his daughter Kim(Maggie Grace). When his daughter decides to go on a trip to Paris with her friend at first he refuses to allow her to go, going against what his ex wife(Famke Janssen) thinks. He changes his mind, on conditions that his daughter agrees to. However shortly after arriving, Kim and her friend are kidnapped and Bryan sets out to do whatever it takes to find his daughter and kill anyone who was involved.
Now when I first saw the trailer to this movie, I thought it was going to be another Man on Fire, except with Liam Neeson filling in for Denzel Washington. And sure enough that is how some of the movie seemed to play out. But no worries, this is not a rip off of Man on Fire. Actually I prefer to think if it as what would happen if Jason Bourne had a daughter and she was kidnapped. And actually that's what it is.
I've actually lost count how many times Liam Neeson has played a bad ass, but it's one thing I never get tired of. However in this movie, he is BAD ASS! And the movie does a good job of setting up how bad ass he or should I say how experienced his character is. He actually does some investigating and plans shit out as suppose to Jason Bourne being extremely reckless and trashing half of Paris. And not only does he have the balls to threaten the kidnappers, he goes by himself to Paris to find these guys. Now while the first 15-20 min of the movie sets things up the rest of the movie is fast paced. There are maybe a few times when the movie slows down, but there are only a handful of these scenes. The rest of the time is Liam Neeson just beating the crap out people and killing them.
If you're looking for any character development then you might wanna look somewhere else because there is very little. Whatever you know about the characters or find out about them is whatever they say in dialogue. But honestly, this movie doesn't need any type of character development because of the simplicity of the story. Quite frankly all you really need to care about is Liam Neeson and how bad ass he is. I'm not saying that there was shitty acting, it's just that a lot of the characters in the movie are not in it long enough for you to really care about them. What's funny is that even though Famke Janssen is only in the movie for about 10 min, you actually hate her because she is that much of a bitch. And you could actually care less about the daughter's friend(Hell Liam Neeson does). When they kidnapped her I was actually thinking "screw that bitch just kill her."
Overall this was a really awesome movie. It's one of those movies that just goes with the flow of things and it works really well. Nothing felt out of place and there were no unnecessary scenes or exposition which makes the movie that much better. I'm definitely gonna watch this again when it's released in theaters. So when it does give it a shot and watch it with some friends because it will make watching it that much better when you and your buddies are going "Oh shit dude did you see what he just did to that guy!?" I wonder what bad ass role Liam Neeson is going to do next?
