My boyfriend and I started the day with the idea that we would go and see a film - so, we went onto the cinema's website to see what films were on; and the only one that even seemed remotely worth seeing was...
'The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas'.
Now, we both thought that it was going to be quite...informative, for lack of a better word. And neither of us had read the book - I went in wondering if there would be any violent scenes; but, thus was proved.
I came out of the cinema still with tears in my eyes.
Now, I did warn about the spoilers in the title, so don't complain if you didn't want spoilers.
But the final scenes of Bruno and Shmuel in the chamber; I went 'Oh my god, no'; when one of the prisoners said 'It's just a shower'; and as they were being lead to the chamber, I was restraining tears and had my hand firmly over my mouth trying not to let out whimpers of 'No no no no'
And then, as soon as the man in the gas-mask poured the particles of what was inevitably Zyklon B into the chamber, I simply looked away, weeping and buried my head into my boyfriend's shoulder.
I lifted it, however, to catch a glimpse at the very final shots - The bodies ready for the crematoria, Bruno's mother's screams, his sister's devastated look; and finally, all the 'Striped Pyjama's' in the room.
Extremely powerful film - I can safely say that I have never cried so hard at any film I have ever seen as much as I did in this.
Now, depressive anecdote aside, I would like to know - from people who have and have not read the book; what was your opinion on this movie? Did you cry? Did you see/hear, or was with someone who did cry at this? Did you think it was true to the book (if applicable to you), and most of all - Did you enjoy it?
At the beginning of this movie, I leant over to Alex and muttered
'I think this movie would have been more effective if it was in German with English subtitles'
What did you think of the voicing, accents and other making-of matters?
Thanks for reading this long-ass post!
