Iron Man - Not too overrated, but enough to make me question people's ability to engage in rational thought. Fun, but shallow is how I'd characterise it.
Citizen Kane - Yes it's a good story, with some decent acting. But the way some people talk about it you'd swear cinema started in 1941. I've seen a lot of the camera techniques it's famous for in older films. Triumph of the Will had all those low camera shots etc. and did more for cinematic technique than Kane did. At least I think so. The Soviet films from the 20s also pushed film forward in big, big ways. I think Citizen Kane is more famous because it's an American film with these techniques, thus allowing people to claim influence from it as opposed to Nazi and Soviet films, than because it was actually innovative.
Anchorman - Funniest comedy ever? Not by a long shot. Great dialogue at times; there's some very funny stuff, but it's not good enough to warrant the praise it gets.
Harry Potter - Absolutely. They're relatively fun and I watch them when they come out, but they really aren't anything spectacular. The films don't have the time to spend developing all the characters and minor details which made the books better. But the films aren't that special. Neither are the books, but we're talking films here.
The Dark Knight I don't think is overrated, I think it's amazing. But when people talk about it too much it is annoying. It doesn't mean it's overrated (I feel much of the praise it has gotten is warranted), just that you're reaching saturation point regarding hearing about it.
once again listing Citizen Kane along a couple of superhero movies is moronic to say the least. While Kane was praised by directors, actors, critics,Cahiers du cinema,Sight and sound, etc by who was Harry Potter praised to the limit ? everyone says the first two movies suck.as well as iron man. Who praises these ? if you consider the opinions of fanboys as the definitive ones you're wrong
Its very easy to dismiss Citizen Kane today because most of its innovations in story telling and cinematography are just a bunch of things that we take for granted now.
Though even without Citizen Kane those innovations would have still appeared sooner or later in a different movie.
The film was great for its time. I can't fault the story telling, or the editing or the direction. Just the lavish praise it receives seems, at least to me, to be disproportionate to the actual technical innovations it was supposed to have accomplished. Especially in contrast to the distinct lack of recognition that the films of the 20s and 30s from Soviet Russia and Germany get from the general film world. I don't believe Citizen Kane deserves all of the credit it gets, and I don't think the film's perfect by any stretch. Hence my thinking that it is overrated.
Overrated does not automatically mean bad. Or that I think the film was worthless. It means that it has received too much praise. I liked Citizen Kane, I just didn't think it was perfect the way so many people shite on about it. Hence, I think it's overrated.
It's all subjective. You get people like you who are fangirls/boys of Citizen Kane. Should your opinion be completely discredited because from what you've said fangirls/boys are not good judges of films. Or should the opinions of those anonymous directors, critics etc that you've mentioned be discredited? A fanboy/girl is someone who can't take criticism of their beloved object and cannot see or acknowledge flaws, criticism or a difference of opinion regarding the object in question. In this case it's Citizen Kane. You can't accept my opinion on Citizen Kane so you're a fanboy, and if I were to accept your point of view regarding fanboys and girls, I'd say you're a poor judge of the movie.
Slumdog Millionaire is shit.
Way too reliant in convenience and coincidence to resolve all of its conflict.
It sucks that it won an Oscar.
It suck that there are actually people who thinks this movie is good.
Well I don't know how many of you saw this but it is a movie that many people didn't like. Many people said that the plot was bleak. Now I think many people didn't like the movie because it dealt with an issue that many people don't want to talk a…
