As a casual movie fan, the difference between Blu-ray and normal dvd isn't enough for me to justify making an investment into the format (I do have a PS3, but I don't use it for dvd watching). I think the fact that there is a step-up for those who do want a high-end experience is a good thing, but my opinion is that people who are still watching traditional dvd's aren't missing anything.
Of course, HD is already dead, so no point in having a position on that one way or the other.
Who needs Blu-Ray or HD when 1080 HDMI DVD players are super cheap. You can get one for $60 and an HDMI cable for $30. That's less than a hundred dollars for a really nice setup that'll make your traditional DVDs run at the same quality as it would on Blu-Ray players.
It's just not the same. Seriously, I used to think the same way you did. But when you actually go to a demo and see them side by side, you can tell the difference.
The 1080 DVD Player does help, but seriously I'd still choose Blu-Ray. Just use the PS3. Buy the films on E-bay and half.com. I did all that and I'm on the same budget as I was with DVD practically.
Yeah!! Can't wait for the custom Extended Cuts! Really cool that they put the extended and deleted scenes on the 1-disc edition too. But I'm going Blu and Special on this one baby! :)
