If it's crap... We'll tell you

Johnny Depp has reportedly been approached to play a villain in the next Batman movie.

The actor is wanted to portray The Riddler in the sequel to ‘The Dark Knight', according to studio bosses.

A source said: "Johnny would be amazing as The Riddler. The studio knew they needed someone who could match or even top the late actor Heath Ledger's performance as The Joker in the most recent film ‘The Dark Knight', and think Johnny has the potential to do so."

The Riddler is a manic super-villain who baffles Batman with his cryptic criminal clues.

He first appeared in the comic book series in 1948, and was portrayed by Frank Gorshin in the 60s US TV show, a role which earned him an Emmy nomination.

More recently, The Riddler was played by Jim Carrey in the 1995 movie ‘Batman Forever'.

Studio bosses are also said to be keen to sign up Philip Seymour Hoffman to play The Penguin in the new movie.

They reportedly believe the Oscar-winning star would be the right choice to play the aristocratic, intelligent and terrifying villain.

Christian Bale is currently wowing critics with his portrayal of the Caped Crusader in ‘The Dark Knight' alongside Heath Ledger, who died of an accidental drugs overdose in January, Aaron Eckhart, Sir Michael Caine and Maggie Gyllenhaal.

And:

Actor Johnny Depp is being tipped to be the next Batman villain, taking on the role of The Riddler.

Movie bosses are convinced that they will be able to get Depp to take on the role, especially after The Dark Knight broke all records at the box office shortly after its release.

Now, the National Enquirer reveals that bosses want Depp in the next instalment, as well as Philip Seymour Hoffman who they think will be perfect for the role of another of the Caped Crusader's arch-foes, the Penguin, reports Contactmusic.

'(Producers) are convinced that the role of the Riddler is perfect for Depp. Johnny's a pro. He'll be able to take direction from director Chris Nolan and still make the character his own,' a source told the tabloid.

'And what better Penguin is there than Philip Seymour Hoffman,' the source added.

The Riddler was played on the small screen by Frank Gorshin in the 1960s, and by Jim Carrey in 1995 movie Batman Forever.

Penguin was played on the small screen by Burgess Meredith and on the big screen by Danny DeVito.

i like the idea of the bank manager who the joker talked to in the intro (what doesn't kill you makes you stranger) but depp could work too

Honestly, if the Riddler is chosen as one of the villains, I hope they go a different route.

I rather think that Michael Emerson (Ben in Lost, Zep in Saw) would make an outstanding Riddler, especially if they go for more of a calculating evil genius with an obsessive compulsive disorder. Manic insanity has already been done, so I'd be surprised if they go down that road.

Too much of a "pretty boy", would rather see a more "geeky" looking person, maybe a no name actor.

this is true, and again, the bank manager could be cool

Well Johny Depp had his fair share of acting in bad movies ( Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Pirates of the Carribbean 3), but he is a very good actor, and if he acts darkly, as if this where a TIm Burtan film, then he'd make a great riddler. Also if he adds some of his Jack Sparrowness ( as in more of a joking like manner ) then he can probably do well.

i agree completely

Good to see that someone agrees. Thoug im having second thoughts now about this. I mean yes he's a good actor, but the problem is, every time i see the riddler, i sadly see a combination of a sadistic man, and the old riddler as Jim Carrey. So if Johnny Depp TRIES to be like that then i dont think he'd do a very good job :[, so hopefully he may take a different approach like Heath Ledger ( R.I.P.) and do well. Though i do wonder how it will turn out :/
