Some anime can get into boobs and violence only, but I can think of much more that have true philosophical value. I have to question what series you are basing your judgement on, Freehaven.
dbz, code geass, love hina, ghost in the shell, akira, sword of the stranger, gto, full metal panic, cowboy bebop, the batman dvd, naurto, bleach, slayers, revolutionary girl utena, and a million other things I watched in high school
I don't hate all of it, I liked death note and Full metal alchemist ...but that is about it.
Ok, some of is not my thing, but that is most of the Toonami line-up if memory serves (I haven't watched TV in about 2 years, ever since Dresden Files was cancelled). I'd suggest looking into This Ugly Yet Beautiful World, Neon Genesis Evangelion, or something that doesn't have a cartoon network attachment. They usually appeal to the older and more mature age groups.
My initial comment was to do blog post reviews. If that was unclear, then my apologies. As to your question, Chig, I completely agree he has the right to dislike anime all he wants. I was only suggesting an alternate to the list he presented. I don't really care if he does or doesn't see them.
I'm not sure how this movie being sentimental is a bad thing.
Grave Of The Fireflies was written by Nosaka Akiyuki as a way to cope with the feelings of guilt he still felt in 1967 about being unable to keep his little sisters from dying in post-war Japan.
I mean over sentimental to the point it becomes cheesy and you makes no emotional impact on you. If every scene of a film is meant to be super sad, by the end you don't feel anything any more.
The subject matter is serious, but it was done in a cheesy sentimental way. I again reiterate I haven't watched it in years, and I have been known to be a tard.
But from what I remember it was just a bunch of scenes of the main characters little sister doing "OMG THAT IS SO SAD" things over an over again to the point it lost all emotional impact.

I know. I KNOW this is so dated, but to be fair, we recorded this in mid November and it apparently took awhile to edit. Listen as I attempt to defend Potter against Twilight's main fan base; did I fail or did I succeed? This is something my school'…
