When anything is hugely popular, Hollywood immediately pounces on it to make a movie out of it. That’s no secret. So why haven’t we heard anything about plans to make a movie out of Grand Theft Auto? The latest version GTA IV sold ten bajillion copies. That’s movie money just waiting to be stuffed in some Hollywood executive’s pocket.
Nikki Finke thinks she has the answer. In her latest column she claims it’s because Fox Atomic owns the rights to make a movie called Grand Theft Auto… only the movie they own the rights to has nothing to do with the videogame, but is based on a 1977 Roger Corman pic. I’m not entirely sure how that prevents a GTA movie from happening, I mean couldn’t they just rename it? Here’s a suggestion: What about calling it GTA? But Nikki insists this is the problem, and since we’ve heard no word of a movie I suppose it’s as good a guess as any.
If that’s the problem, then I have a solution: Why doesn’t Fox Atomic make a GTA movie? It’s not like they’ve got anything else happening over there that people want to see.
I agree, there is no real point because there is nothing coheesive in GTA, its a different story each time and has nothing that hasnt been done in films, it doesnt have an "original" coheesive story such as Bioshock, Mass Effect or Halo, the only way a GTA movie could be made is if it followed GTA 4's story or what happened to Niko before the events of GTA 4 because Niko is the most realistic character that isnt based on characters from movies in the first place.
Im not too sure about that, the biggest entertainment franchise in the world gets a movie but it doesnt get made because of some bad press? I dont think so, GTA has always got bad press but sold millions, the same thing would happen with the film, I do still agree that GTA doesnt suit well to being a film and thats the main reason it wont be made, not because of bad press.
