DVD Snobs REJOICE!: Criterion Collection Goes Blu This Fall

Their latest newsletter confirms it and lists the first batch of BR titles they'll be releasing. Most of them are upgrades of films they've already released in SD, but a few brand-new titles are included (Chungking Express, Bottle Rocket, and El Norte). The best news? The BR discs will be the exact same price as their Standard counterparts, instead of the typical mark-up the major studios force on BR collectors! Here's the e-mail, containing the full list:

Dear Criterion Collection Newsletter subscriber,

We’ve got some exciting news for this fall, and we wanted you to hear it first.

Our first Blu-ray discs are coming! We’ve picked a little over a dozen titles from the collection for Blu-ray treatment, and we’ll begin rolling them out in October. These new editions will feature glorious high-definition picture and sound, all the supplemental content of the DVD releases, and they will be priced to match our standard-def editions.

Here’s what’s in the pipeline:

The Third Man
Bottle Rocket
Chungking Express
The Man Who Fell to Earth
The Last Emperor
El Norte
The 400 Blows
Gimme Shelter
The Complete Monterey Pop
Contempt
Walkabout
For All Mankind
The Wages of Fear

Alongside our DVD and Blu-ray box sets of The Last Emperor, we’ll also be putting out the theatrical version as a stand-alone release in both formats, priced at $39.95. Our Blu-ray release of Walkabout will be an all-new edition, featuring new supplements as well as a new transfer; we will also release an updated anamorphic DVD of Nicolas Roeg’s outback masterpiece at the same time.

As a special thank you to our newsletter subscribers, we’d like to offer you all $10 off any order of $60 or more placed on on criterion.com through Monday, May 26. Just use the code OFBT and you’ll also qualify for free shipping.

The criterion collection is great but expensive. I really don't want to see what the new prices are going to be.
Exactly the same as before, the newsletter says.
Kurosawa is my all time favorite director. It is a shame that they don't lead the way with his films.
But they got the "The Third Man," "The 400 Blows," and "The Wages of Fear" on there.

=(
To bad Blu Ray sucks.
HD-DVD fanboy maybe >_>
Blu Ray is no better than HD-TV. I don't plan on buying either format, I still watch VCR to Christ Sakes.
Umm...you mean HD programming? Because blu-ray is played on a HDTV.

And yes, there is a difference between the HD programs and Blu-ray. Namely that fact that broadcasts are stuck with a bitrate barely higher than a regular dvd, while BD tops of at 40mbits. So compression artifacts are much less frequent, and you also can get a lossless copy of the studio master track...while broadcasts are currently using standard DD tracks.
The Man Who Fell To Earth, finally on Blu-Ray.

Now everyone can see David Bowie's penis in high def.

The masses rejoice.
Peopel will finally see the mole. oops i've said to much.

nope
