When I first watched that Family Guy episode when Peter tries to explain why he "don't care for the Godfather", I kind of felt that he was taking the words out of my mouth. For so long I have been struggeling to explain to everyone why I never have been able to finish that movie, simply because I fall asleep somewhere half way through. It is dull, boring, long and...well, as Peter states "It insists upon itself".
I watched them once and had a less than favorable view of them. I took the time to re-watch them and I still think calling them some of the best movies of all time is pretty rediculous. I think the first 2 could have been edited into 3 shorter, more focused films--father's rise, father's fall and son's rise, then son's fall--and would have been a lot better, but still not worthy of quite the acclaim they get. I found it hard to get into them as well...I couldn't connect, there's no character I could really sympatize with or root for, and for me the performances weren't like There Will Be Bloodily good where it can propel itsself on intensity and acting alone.
I feel like the scenes of hiding out in Italy and getting married could have been completely removed without hurting the story...and giving it more time to not bore the hell out of people, that alone disqualifies it from being 'the perfect movie'. Seriously, the bodyguard tries to kill him with a bomb and instead kills the wife...why not just shoot the other bodyguard and then Pacino when they are wandering alone through the landscape and get it over with for certain...STORY OVER...what a 'tard.
I also can't see Citizen Kane still getting the acclaim it does, I get the themes and agree with them strongly, I just didn't feel like it was worth the time I spent to watch it.
