If it's crap... We'll tell you

You know what I mean. Films that are great, but for some reason or another just don't seem to click with the general audience (like Serenity or Shoot 'Em Up), or are released too close to a smiliar film and gets swept aside by the competition (like Deep Impact or Rob Roy)
What films do you love, and wish were beter recognized?

-Go:This is one of my favorite movies that doesn't get any props. The xtasy cat of doom makes me laugh till I cry.

-Confessions of a Dangerous Mind: Written by genius Charley Kaufman and based on a book by game show host Chuck Barris, it's either one of the greatest hoaxes ever or there is some seriously scary s$%t going on. Plus-George Clooney actually a great director...the man is awesome.

-Conspiracy Theory: It's hard to make yourself sit down and watch a movie with Mel Gibson AND Julia Roberts but this one has a great story, is funny as hell and has Patrick Stewart as a villain. How can you not love it?

-Payback: Ok, so I like some Mel Gibson films a lot. This is one of the best action comedies ever made but nobody saw it.

-Dragons Forever: Massive hit in China that never got an American re-release but trust me-This is Jackie Chan's finest hour. Crazy CRAZY f$%king stunts unlike anything you've ever seen.

-The Exorcist III: Nothing like the original (or the terrible sequel) but a great mystery with one of the greatest monologues ever by George C Scott at the end.

-Kiss Kiss Bang Bang: I am tempted to put this masterful piece of writing into my top ten movies ever list. Shane Black is the man. It's funnier and tighter written than pretty much anything I have seen in years.

-Serenity: Of course this is here. I'm still SHOCKED by the amount of people who haven't even seen this. This, Empire, and Khan are the three best sci-fi films ever.

-Smoke: A really great indie drama with Forrest Whittaker and Harvey Keitel (amongst others). This is totally worth searching for.

-The Stendahl Syndrome: A Dario Argento film about a policewoman who goes into hallucinatory states when she sees great works of art. Unfortunately she's tracking a serial killer who likes art. A return to coolness for the master.

-The Ninth Configuration: That OTHER movie written by William Peter Blatty (The Exorcist). This is a fun romp about a psychologist at a military nuthouse who may or may not be crazy himself. Totally great and way ignored.

-Swimming with Sharks: The best Kevin Spacey performance ever. Awesome revenge comedy.

-The Woman Chaser: Good luck finding it. Proof positive that Patrick Warburton is one of the best comic actors working today. This noir comedy is brilliant.

-Bound: The Wachowski Brothers before the Matrix films. This is an nice little potboiler about Gina Gershon and Jennifer Tilly stealing mob money from Joe Pantoliano and having hot lesbian sex. Terrific.

-Cemetary Man: A zombie comedy totally worth seeing that you've never heard of? Trust Cyrus here. Sure it turns into bizarre surreal madness at the end but it's awesome anyways. Plus, one of the hottest italian woman you have ever seen gets naked constantly.

-Cinderalla Man: Beat the crap out of all those other recent boxing movies. Say what you will about Russel Crowe. He may be an ass in real life (apparently) but he's one hell of an actor.

My god, I thought I was the only person on earth who'd seen and still remembered The Ninth Configuration. Joy!

That movie..rocks. I even found it on DVD...in a PAWN SHOP for like 2 bucks. I rock too.

Whoa dude, The Woman Chaser. I still have it on Videotape. It came out during my Willeford phase. Very fortunate for me. I'm sure it's available in a few stores. There's always ebay and other online sellers. I don't see it coming out on DVD anytime soon. The director would have to have a hit and then his back catalog might gain more interest.

There's a number of films in my collection that I have friends look at my collection and go "what the hell is this?" Most of the films, though, are foreign.

Anyway, some flicks that need a bigger audience or at least more appreciation:

Grindhouse (2007): My most favorite flick of the year so far. It's heartbreaking for me that this film flopped. It's a totally unique experience and I enjoyed about every second of it (despite the dragging points in Death Proof). However, it's more of a flick for fans of the directors or of grindhouse films.

Brain Donors (1992) It's a comedy produced by the Zucker Brothers done in the spiriti of Marx Brothers slapstick. It's got a lot of clever one-liners and John Turturro is hilarious in it.

Man Bites Dog (1992) It's a mockumentary from Belgium about a camera crew making a documentary on this guy named Ben. Ben's well-liked, sophisticated, loves art and music, well-mannered...and a serial killer/thief. The humor is blacker than the blackest hell.

Waking Life (2001) Richard Linklater's animated (well, rotoscoped) flick about a young man meeting various people in his lucid dreaming state. I love this movie. It's beautiful to look at, and its a real mind-expander.

Lord of War (2005) A lot of people I talk to hate this movie. I dug the hell out of it! It's got a good screenplay and I think Nick Cage is a really good actor, depending on the role. There are films he's painfully bad in (cough cough Ghost Rider) but there are a couple that he's actually good in. This, and The Weather Man (Sorry, Cyrus).

Those are just a couple.

Ok, don't take anything here personally, it's just my opinion...
-Grindhouse: Tarantino half is mostly boring as hell. Rodriguez half, well, it suffers from the same scripting issues every other Rodriguez film does.

-Brain Donors: This is really more 3 stooges than marx brothers. Stanley Tucci (who for some reason I ALWAYS mix up with Turturro) was in a Marx brothers-ish flick though with Oliver Platt called The Imposters.

-Man Bites Dog: This movie is indeed awesome but not for the even vaguely faint of heart.

-Waking Life: I hate this movie. Boring boring boring. It's like listening to a bunch of first year philosophy majors on acid ramble incoherently for 2 hours.

-Lord of War: The rest of the guys loved this but I thought it was just ok.

I think what's brilliant about the rape scene is it is when the film is meant to stop being a comedy. It supposed to be going too far to point out to the audience how jaded they've become and to become shocked that it took something that extreme to jar one into realization of what they are laughing at. At least, that was my take on it anyways.

Hey, to each their own, man. I agree on MBD. It's one of those flicks that I hesitate to show to some of my friends. NEVER to my ex-girlfriends when I dated them. There's one scene I always fast forward through, which is of course the rape scene. It's uncomfortable to watch. But the rest of it I really enjoyed.

Waking Life: I like that kind of stuff. I've always found philosophy and stuff like that very interesting. At first I was bored by it, but it grew on me over time.

And GH: Yes, Tarantino's dragged on BIG time. But as Carlyle said in the site's review "the payoff at the end (...) makes for a better movie." Rodriguez' was just fun. And I loved the fake trailers.

I don't take opposing opinions on a personal level. As long as they're mature about it, which you certainly are. We're all adults here.
